Revere council talks school zone signs

Sara Brown

April 24, 2012 by Sara Brown

REVERE – Councilor at large Jessica Giannino requested that the mayor review the placement and condition of various school zone signs throughout the city at Monday night?s meeting.?I?ve been driving through the city and noticed many of the school zone signs are in poor condition,” Giannino said. The councilor said that since the public schools have changed their hours in recent years, the timing of the signs flashing are off.?Sometimes they are flashing when school is no longer in session and sometimes they don?t flash at all,” she said. She also expressed concerns about the “rough condition” some of them were in.?Many of them are broken and need to be replaced. Also, some of them are missing altogether,” Giannino added. “When we have done so much work about adding crossing guards and such, this makes sense to do.”Council President Richard Penta suggested that the mayor also take the matter up with the school committee.?They would probably be a lot of help when it comes to this since they know when the schools open and close,” he said.Giannino agreed with the suggestion. In other business, Ruth DeSantis is requesting permission from the council to operate a physical fitness training facility on lot 10 at 41 Marble St.DeSantis said it would be a small fitness studio offering classes for 10 people at a time.?It?s a good thing for the neighborhood,” Edward Robichaud said, who has owned the building for 12 years now. “There is already a dance studio there and I think it would compliment it very well.”The council seemed in favor of the fitness studio.?The neighbors in the area are happy with how the building is being operated and I am sure they will be happy with this,” Ward 6 councilor Charles Patch said.?I think this is what Revere needs. It will encourage everyone to stay active and be fit,” Giannino added. “We talk about beautification of the city, now this is the beautification of the residents.”?It?s a win-win for the city,” Councilor at large John R. Correggio said. While the request automatically has to be sent to the subcommittee, Penta predicted a favorable outcome for DeSantis.?Listening to the councilors, you are going to get it,” he said.Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
