Roundup: Classical softball defeats Malden

Coming back from a 3-0 deficit, the Classical softball team defeated Malden, 7-5, at Breed on Sunday.”We had incredible defense,” Rams coach Chris Warren said. “We had three plays at the plate for outs.”Both teams were undefeated going into the game and Malden was highly ranked (No. 3) in a Globe state poll. The Golden Tornados took a 3-0 lead after two innings.Classical rallied in the third, putting runners on second and third, and Adriana Raymond, pinch-hitting for Franki Galeazzi, hit a three-run homer to tie it.The Rams (8-0) went up 4-3 in the fourth, when Olivia DeJoie singled to drive in Krista Cuozzo (pinch-running for Mackenzie Coppinger).Malden tied it in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead an inning later.In the sixth, Chelsey Bartlett singled and took second on an error. Chelsea Martin pinch-ran for Bartlett, who had gotten banged-up behind the plate previously. Mackenzie Coppinger then got hit by a pitch.DeJoie singled to tie it 5-5, and Jennie Erekson reached on a fielder’s choice. Bobbie Dee Regan pinch-hit for Cuozzo and delivered a two-run triple, scoring Coppinger and Erekson to make it 7-5.Coppinger pitched for Classical, striking out six and walking four, with one hit by pitch. She allowed six hits.Warren noted his pinch-hitters drove in five runs.”You can’t ask for anything more than that by pinch-hitters,” he said.St. Mary’s 7, Fenwick 3At Fenwick, the Spartans (7-1) toppled the host Crusaders in the “At Bat for Buddy” Tournament honoring Fenwick’s late coach Ed Henry.Kayleigh Finigan went 4-for-4 with a fence-clearing home run and two RBI to lead the Spartans. Alison Butler (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Tatiana Doucette (2-for-4, RBI) added to the attack in support of winning pitcher Brooke L’Abbe, who scattered five hits and struck out three.BASEBALLClassical 13, Winthrop 2At Fraser Field on Sunday, senior Ryan Hayward, making his first start of the season, went five innings and struck out six to pick up the win for the Rams (9-2). Joe Rose worked the final two innings.”Ryan came up big. He threw strikes and did a nice job. We’ve got a tough week ahead and we’re moving into the part of our schedule where we’re playing three games a week instead of two. Knowing we have those third and fourth guys who can step in and go for us is a big help,” said Rams coach Mike Zukowski.Winthrop grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Rams responded with five in the bottom of the first. Classical’s first run crossed on a bases-loaded walk, then two more scored on a misplayed outfield fly. Brad Scuzzarella rapped a two-run single for the 5-1 edge. Classical added two runs in the third, three in the fourth and three in the sixth to close out the lopsided win.Scuzzarella (2-for-4, three RBI), Kyle Devin (2-for-3, RBI), John Finnegan (two RBI) and Kyle Gauthier (hit, three runs scored) were the offensive catalysts for Classical.Lynnfield 4, Malden 3At Lynnfield, the Pioneers (6-2) picked up a non-league win when John Festa drove in Chris Lang (HBP) with the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Festa also had a two-out, two-run single in the fifth and Carmine DiCesare belted a solo home run in the sixth. Steve Lamb worked six solid innings for the Pioneers, leaving with the score tied at 2-2. Chris DeHuelle surrendered a run in the seventh but picked up his third win when Festa delivered. Shortstop B.J. Neal and Lang excelled on defense.St. John’s 6, Everett 3At Everett, Rob Woodward (3-0) picked up the win with five and two-thirds innings of three-hit work and Rob DeFranco worked out of a bases-loaded jam to pick up the save for the Eagles (9-2). Andrew Donahue (double, two runs), Rory Garrison (triple, run), Tyler Noe (RBI), Nick Bragoli (RBI), Brandon Bingel and David Bornstein collected the Eagles’ hits. St. John’s put the game away with two unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Shortstop Tyler Noe anchored a strong defensive performance with four assists.Fenwick 15, Worcester North 0At Worcester, Joe L
