Baseball: Fenwick edges Arlington Catholic in 11 innings

As wins go, they don’t get much more dramatic than Bishop Fenwick’s 6-5 victory over Arlington Catholic at Peabody on Wednesday.The Crusaders trailed 2-1 in the 11th. They managed to load the bases and with two outs and two strikes, freshman designated hitter Mike Campatelli smashed a double, scoring two runs to put Fenwick up for good, 3-2. Campatelli also scored Fenwick’s first run of the game on a Mike Cipriani single in the third inning.Kevin Church had a monster game on the mound for Fenwick. He went all 11 innings, allowed only three hits and four walks and struck out 13.”He had command of all three pitches, his fastball, his changeup and his curve,” coach Kevin Canty said. “It was nice to pull out a win like this.”Classical 4, Swampscott 3At Swampscott, after surrendering a three-run lead, the Rams pulled out the win on an RBI single in the top of the seventh by Ryan Hayward.The game was scoreless through three innings. Classical scored one run in the fourth inning keyed by a Michael Crisostomo RBI double, and scored two runs in the fifth inning courtesy of a Kyle Gauthier RBI single and John Finnigan RBI double.Classical (8-2) led 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Big Blue put three on the board in the fifth, sparked by a Trevor Massey RBI single. An outfield error allowed two other runs to score. With the score tied in the top of the seventh, Gauthier led off with a single, and Kyle Devin was then intentionally walked. With one out, Ryan Hayward hit the game-winning RBI single.Gauthier had a strong performance on the hill for Classical (7 innings, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks, 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned runs). Gauthier added two hits, two runs scored and 1 RBI. For Swampscott, Massey had a good day at the dish (3 hits, RBI, run scored). Sean O’Brien had a strong performance on the mound (7 innings, 10 strikeouts, 3 walks, 9 hits, 4 runs). Swampscott is now 7-4.Peabody 3, Danvers 2At Peabody, Danvers struck in the first inning, with a two-run homer from pitcher Ray Arocho. Peabody scored one in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1, Danvers. The score stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Steve Girolamo hit a two-out RBI double that tied the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Peabody scored the winning run on an Arocho wild pitch. Pitcher Pat Ruotolo was dominant for Peabody (7 innings, 5 hits, 0 walks, 8 strikeouts, 2 runs). Ruotolo retired the last 11 Danvers batters in a row. For the Peabody (9-3) offense, Girolamo (2-3, RBI) and Matt McIsaac (2-3) had strong performances. Danvers’ (9-3) Arocho had pitched well (7 innings, 6 hits, 5 walks, 6 strikeouts, 3 runs).St. John’s 1, Catholic Memorial 0At St. John’s, the game was scoreless through the first nine innings. In the bottom of the 10th, St. John’s Brandon Bingel led off with a single. Nicholas Sadler pinch-ran for Bingel and stole second. Nick Bargole then came up and hit the game-winning single up the middle that scored Sadler. Bingel was dominant on the mound, and threw just 79 pitches in 10 innings (6 strikeouts, 6 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs). St. John’s is 11-2.Marblehead 10, Revere 0At Tony C Field, Marblehead was only up 2-0 through five innings. The Magicians had a six-run sixth inning to put the game away. Leading the Marblehead offense were Casey Stead (2 hits, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored, 2 stolen bases) and Colton Dana (2 hits, 2 runs scored). Marblehead pitcher Braden Engstrom kept the Revere bats asleep all game long (7 innings, 4 hits, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks). Marblehead is now 4-7.Gloucester 4, Beverly 1At Beverly, the Panthers’ Anthony DiOrio had an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, which scored the lone Beverly run. Alex Toomey had a strong performance for Beverly (2 hits). Beverly (6-4) had its four-game win streak snapped.
