LYNN – On paper, Wednesday’s Swampscott-Classical softball game shaped up to be a stiff test for the unbeaten Rams. The Big Blue were 6-2 and streaking. They had their ace, Angela Vousboukis, on the mound, and they seemed primed going in to give Classical a real challenge. It didn’t turn out that way, though. At the end of the day, it was Classical 13, Swampscott 3, and Swampscott coach Frank Kowalski was left to scratch his head afterward.Click here for a photo gallery.”Classical is a very good team,” he said. “The coaches do a good job over there. But we didn’t play well. I thought we’d be a little more prepared than we were.”Classical raised its record to 10-0, but since the Rams play 22 games, and count them all, they need one more win to qualify for the state tournament.”We knew we were in for a hard week, with Marblehead (Monday), Swampscott and Gloucester,” Classical coach Chris Warren said. “Every year, our first goal is to make the tournament. So our goal today was to just get one step closer.”The Rams jumped on Swampscott and Vousboukis right away, scoring 10 of their 13 runs in the first three innings. In the first, after Vousboukis got the first two outs, Danielle Moran singled, Chelsey Bartlett drew a walk, and Mackenzie Coppinger helped her cause out tremendously by doubling them both home with a shot to right-center field. It was evident from the start that Vousboukis didn’t have good command.”No,” Kowalski said. “She left a lot of pitches up. And a good hitting team like Classical will take advantage of that.”Classical batted around in the second. Jennie Erekson led off by reaching on an infield hit. With one out, Krista Cuozzo got another infield hit and Franki Galeazzi reached on a fielder’s choice, with Erekson beating the throw to third.Samantha Earp brought all three runs in with a double. She went to third on an error, and scored when Moran grounded out to first. The Rams got four more in the third. Erekson, who had three hits, led off with a single and came around on an error. Adriana Raymond got an infield hit and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Moran. Cuozzo, who had reached on an error, scored – along with Moran – on Bartlett’s triple.Swampscott got two of those runs back in the top of the fourth. Kelly Birchmore led off by reaching on an error and scored on Lindsay Marini’s grounder to short. Merry Ball had an infield single, and came around when Julia Potter reached on an error. However, Potter was erased for the final out of the inning trying to take an extra base on the play.Classical got two more runs in the fifth on RBI hits from Bartlett and Coppinger, and scored its final run in the sixth when Erekson, who led off with a bunt single, came home on a passed ball.Swampscott got its final run in the seventh on a Classical error.”I thought we played a good game, and that Mackenzie pitched great,” Warren said. “She got wild at times, but I thought she threw the ball hard.”And,” he said, “I liked the fact that on such a cold day, we came mentally ready to play.”Steve Krause can be reached at [email protected].
