Roundup: Marblehead’s Engstrom silences Saugus offense

Marblehead senior pitcher Braden Engstrom stymied the Saugus bats all game long, as Marblehead defeated Saugus 4-0 at Marblehead Wednesday afternoon.Engstrom was dominant from tip to tail (7 innings, 4 strikeouts, 4 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs). Leading the Magician offense was Connor Green (2-3, 2 runs scored, 1 stolen base). Tom Koopman and Brian Daly both had one RBI each. For Saugus, Peter Pulicari had a strong performance on the mound (5 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 strikeouts, 5 walks). Marblehead (7-7) has now won four in a row.BC High 4, St. John’s 2At Danvers, St. John’s was down 3-1 after the third inning. The Prep closed the gap to 3-2, but couldn’t get over the hump. Leading the way for St. John’s was Anthony Capuano (2-for-4, double, run scored). Brandon Bingel had a strong day at the dish (double, RBI, run scored). St. John’s pitcher Dustin Hunt had a strong relief performance (4 innings, 1 run). St. John’s is now 12-4.Whittier 4, Northeast 1At Northeast, it was a 1-1 game through seven innings. Whittier went off for three runs in the top of the eighth inning and that was enough to hold off Northeast. Northeast pitcher Jason Harper of Saugus came in with a perfect 7-0 record on the season. Harper went all eight innings, struck out 12, walked two and surrendered two hits.GIRLS LACROSSEMarian 12, St. Mary’s 8At Marian, leading the way for the Spartans were Gabby Crugnale (3 goals) and Hannah Quin (3 goals). Sophie Fabrizio and Rachel Donahoe both had one goal each for St. Mary’s (3-12).Beverly 9, Peabody 5At Peabody, the Tanners’ Nicole Napolitano led the offensive attack (3 goals). Sarah Napolitano and Christine Feudo both chipped in with one goal each for Peabody (9-3).Fenwick 18, Lowell Catholic 12At Lowell, Fenwick led 8-3 at the half. Leading the way for Fenwick was Grace Celona (5 goals). The rest of the Fenwick goal-scorers were: Anna Moulton (4 goals); Natalie Emerson (3 goals); Vicky Caruso (2 goals); Caroline Crawford (2 goals); Annette Ruggiero (1 goal) and Lexie Rose (1 goal). Fenwick is now 10-4.Marblehead 21, Salem 7At Salem, Marblehead had a comfortable 14-3 lead at the half. Leading the way for Marblehead were Kiley Fischer (5 goals, 3 assists) and Tyler Phillips (5 goals, 1 assist). The rest of the Marblehead offense came from: Eliza Quigley (3 goals, 3 assists); Sydney Cayen (2 goals); Meggie Collins (2 goals, 1 assist); Pam Gregory (1 goal, 1 assist); Cassie Rodgers (1 goal, 2 assists); Carly Robb (1 goal, 1 assist) and Grace McGuirrin (1 goal). Marblehead is now 9-4.BOYS LACROSSEGreater Lowell 14, Tech 11At Greater Lowell, Greater Lowell had a slim lead the whole game, which was just enough to hold off Tech. Leading the way for Tech was Jason Grant (5 goals, 2 assists). Jeremy Quinton had a strong performance (4 goals, 1 assist). E.J. Ward chipped in with two goals and two assists for Tech (5-5).Newburyport 11, Lynnfield 4At Georgetown, the Pioneers (3-7) had solid performances from Blake Strader (2 goals) and Jon Roberto and Andrew Crampe, who each had a goal. Travis Panzini, who normally plays attack, was called on to play goal and hung in there with 14 saves.BOYS TRACKTriton 111, Lynnfield 34At Lynnfield, the Pioneers swept the mile, led by Andrew Drinkwater (4:55). Tim Rice and Graham Leman went two-three. Chase Davidson took a lead early and never relinquished it to win the 2-mile (11:11). The Pioneers also took first in the shot put thanks to D.J. DeGeorge, who notched a personal best with a throw of 49 feet, three inches. DeGeorge also took second in the high hurdles and in the discus.
