REVERE – Revere High School senior Enid Cruz said she never knew she had an artistic side before she took an art class her junior year.?I wanted to take painting and drawing just to see what it is like,” Cruz said.Cruz was among the many artists whose work was displayed in the learning commons on Thursday afternoon for the Senior Art Show. The senior art show is a long lasting tradition at the high school where seniors show off their artwork they have made during their high school career.Cruz said she was surprised about her artistic talent at first.?I had to draw a high heel for one of my classes and I was surprised on how good it turned out,” Cruz said. “Art will certainly stay in my life after I graduate.”Senior John Forte performed an original song he wrote called “Grace” at the showcase. Forte is part of the Revere Rock Ensemble.Forte said he decided to take part in the showcase as a final ho-rah.?I?m going to miss playing music here and everyone I play music with. I thought this would be a fun event to do,” Forte said.?We take any opportunity we can to play music,” added senior Chris Flores, who is also a member of the Revere Rock Ensemble. For many of the students it is the first time they have seen their work displayed.?A lot of them act like they don?t care at first but then they get all excited seeing it and show it off to their friends. I think it is very important to them to see their work like this,” teacher June Krinsky-Rudder said.It is also a great venue to show off their evolution as artists.?You can really see their growth from when they first started to now,” teacher Meghan Allen said. “You can really track their progress.”Co-Director of Student Activities Joanne McKenna said this year?s art show was the “most successful one yet.”?So many students wanted to take part in this year. It really shows off the wonderful talent we have here,” McKenna said.Every senior who wanted to take part in the show picked their own pieces to exhibit. High school students can only take art classes their junior and or senior years.?I think art classes are vital. Some students only come to school because of the art classes,” Krinsky-Rudder said. “I have seniors who have taken AP classes their whole time here and took their first art class senior year, and now feel cheated that they didn?t take more.”For Cruz, art provides an emotional release.?It?s really calming and soothing for me,” Cruz said. “I can express myself without saying a word. I wish I had taken more art classes when I was here.”Sara Brown can be reached at [email protected].
