During the traditional opening day trout fishing tournament at Sluice Pond on Saturday, April 28, enthusiastic anglers crowded the shore hoping to land a trophy trout.Blustery weather with a west wind prevailed, contributing to the success of the Saturday morning event, sponsored by the Lynn Fish and Game Protective Association.Finicky trout responded to most popular bait offerings, including meal worms, power bait, and night crawlers, with an occasional trout being caught while trolling a favorite lure or fly. More than 100 anglers fished from both the banks and from boats, canoes, and kayaks.A total of 28 rainbow and brown trout were weighed in during the morning – not very many considering the hundreds of fish that the state and the Lynn club stocked in the pond during the last few weeks. For most, the key to success was being on the water for first light because that’s when most of the fish were caught.James Guy took first place honors by successfully netting his opening day rainbow trout that tipped the scales at a whopping 3.15 pounds. Sadly, no fish were weighed in for the Women’s Division.Brianna Surawski caught a rainbow trout that weighed 0.93 pounds, for the junior division girl’s trophy and Shawn Moran Jr. caught a 1.39-pound brown trout scoring the junior boy’s trophy. Jack Comeau’s 1.15-poind Rainbow Trout won the peewee boys trophy for him. Many thanks to the Surawski Family for providing all of this year trophies and for sponsoring 10 state Tags N Trout worth $25 each, all in memory of Bill Surowski. Special thanks also go out to the Seelley family who sponsored a $50 gift certificate to Ippi’s Bait & Tackle for a Junior Female angler in the memory of Jean Seelley, an avid salmon angler who often fished with her husband Jack at Sluice Pond.uIf you enjoyed our local derby, you may want to consider fishing the 30th Annual Winni-Derby this year – especially if you like winning cash! This year’s derby sponsors are trying something different on New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee.
