Roundup: Lynnfield baseball overtakes Amesbury

Senior Steve Lamb kept Lynnfield within striking distance of Amesbury with a stellar relief performance and his teammates erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of the Pioneers’ 9-5 come-from-behind win Saturday in Lynnfield.Lamb came on in with no outs in the third inning to squelch an Amesbury rally that saw the Indians take a 5-1 lead and proceeded to allow just two hits the rest of the way, striking out five. Lynnfield improved to 11-3 overall and climbed back into the midst of the Cape Ann League Div. 2 race thanks to North Reading’s loss to Pentucket.”Stevie was just fantastic. He came in and shut them down and was around the plate all day. He did a great job,” said Lynnfield coach John O’Brien. “And the offense came alive in time.”In the decisive sixth inning, Jordan Roper was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the first run, Peter Franchi ripped a game-tying two-run single and Carmine DiCesare delivered the game-winning hit. Craig Anderson then broke it open with a two-run single.Anderson led the Pioneers with three hits, giving him six in the past two games. DiCesare and John Festa added two each while middle infielders B.J. Neal at shortstop and Chris Lang at second base anchored a strong defensive effort.Classical 11, Revere 1At Fraser Field, Rams pitchers Kyle Gauthier and Angel Taveras combined to allow just one walk between them.”We’re throwing well, very well these days,” Rams coach Mike Zukowski said.Gauthier (5 innings, 3 K, 1 BB, 2 H, 1 R) got the win to improve to 5-1. He threw just under 65 pitches.Taveras pitched the last two innings, allowing no hits, no walks and no runs. He also led the Rams at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one run, two walks and three RBI.Classical (9-4) scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second and four in the fourth.M’head 5, Everett 3At Everett, the Magicians (8-7) won their fifth in a row. Sophomore righty Brian Daly got his second win over the Crimson Tide this season. This time around, he allowed three runs on five hits while fanning four over four innings.Ross Gienieczko pitched the last three innings for the save, allowing one hit and fanning five. Leadoff hitter Casey Stead walked three times, scored twice and stole two bases; No. 2 batter Will Quigley went 2-for-4 with two steals and two runs; senior catcher Colton Dana went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base; cleanup hitter Tom Koopman drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and another on a single; and Evan Hafferman hit an RBI single.KIPP-Lynn 16, Comm. Charter 9At the Pingree School, KIPP Academy-Lynn Collegiate (KALC) got strong efforts from Jose Valera (2-for-4, 4 runs, 3 RBI, 6 steals); Ernesto Pelaez (1-4, 3 R, 4 SB); and Ricardo Maria (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 8 SB). KALC scored six runs in the fourth inning of a 6-inning game.Salem 5, English 0At Fraser Field, Ben Kapnis got the complete-game win for Salem (8-5). He threw a five-hitter, walking one and fanning six. Jehnsy Troncoso went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Teghan Malionek had two hits and reached base three times.In other action, Swampscott outlasted Wayland, 11-10; and North Shore rolled past Lynn Tech, 13-7.BOYS LACROSSESt. Mary’s 11, Marian 9At Lynn, the Spartans improved to 5-8 behind four goals and two assists from senior Stephen Poliskey.Coach Shawn Anderson said it was his team’s best game this year, as the Spartans overcame nine ties and goalie Kyle Torosian stood up in net.Nashoba 16, Lynn Tech 2At Lynn, the Tigers (5-7) couldn’t match the visitors’ potent fast break attack. Antonio Guanci and Jason Grant had Tech’s goals.In other action, St. John’s Prep dropped a tight 8-6 decision to No. 3 Lincoln-Sudbury.GIRLS LACROSSESwampscott 15, St. Mary’s 7At Lynn, Big Blue senior midfielder Jesse DePaolo matched the Spartans’ output with seven goals and an assist.
