English softball falls short

The English High softball team has struggled lately, but the Bulldogs gave Masconomet a run for the money before losing 5-4 at Masco in nine innings.The Bulldogs (3-9) were up 4-2 going into the sixth, but Masco scored two to tie it.”We played solid defense,” said English coach Alisa Fila, “They got key hits. They got a hit to win the game. It wasn’t an error. This one could have gone either way.”Pitcher Shanna Zeramby went the distance, giving up seven hits, striking out two and walking three. She also went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.Also for English, Samantha Holey was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Shannon Calnan was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Keri Bryson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.Peabody 15, Salem 1At Salem, the Tanners (9-6) got the job done in five innings behind freshman Shelbi Wilson’s two-hitter. Wilson fanned nine and walked three.Peabody pounced early, scoring seven runs in the first inning and five more in the fourth. Olivia Brothers went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two doubles; Mikayla Wallace (2-for-3); Wilson (1-for-3, 3 RBI); and Katie Brunelle (triple, 3 RBI). Peabody is at Beverly today.Gr. Lawrence 13, Tech 1 (5 innings)At Tech, Ofelia Sermeno doubled to center field in the first inning and scored on a fielder’s choice for the Tigers’ only run. She also played well defensively behind the plate. Sam Oliva took the loss, although she did turn a double play on a line drive back to the circle. Tech is 1-13.Lynnfield 2, Triton 0At Lynnfield, it was senior day for Lynnfield, and its seniors did not disappoint. Lynnfield scored all of its runs in the first inning. Senior Sam Shapleigh bunted and reached on an error, she went to second base on the throwing error. Senior Sarah Flood then reached on an error and Shapleigh went to third. Flood and Shapleigh executed a perfect double steal, and Shapleigh scored to give Lynnfield a 1-0 lead. Flood ended up on third and then senior Julia Goldstein hit a sac fly that scored Flood to make the score 2-0. Lynnfield pitcher Melody Mancinelli silenced the Triton bats (7 innings, 9 strikeouts, 0 walks, 3 hits, 0 runs). Lynnfield is now 12-5.Fenwick 4, Marian 1At Fenwick, Fenwick struck for three runs in the first inning, on a three-run home run from Katherine Melanson. Fenwick added one more in the second on an RBI double from Abby Curran, which made the score 4-0 Fenwick. That was more then enough run support for Fenwick pitcher Christine Smaltz (7 innings, 6 hits, 2 strikeouts, 1 run). Melanson (2-for-3, 3 RBI, run scored) and Curran (2-for-2, RBI, run scored) led the Fenwick offense. Fenwick is now 6-9.BOYS LACROSSEPeabody 11, Triton 9At Peabody, Peabody found itself down 9-8 in the final quarter. The Tanners outscored Triton 3-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Leading the Peabody attack was Kiefer Heckman (6 goals). Josh Fiore chipped in with one goal and one assist for Peabody. Peabody is now 7-8.Arlington Catholic 8, Swampscott 6At Swampscott, Swampscott was down 4-2 at the half and could never get over the hump. Leading the Big Blue attack was Josh Rothwell (2 goals) and Matt Gambale (2 goals). Patrick Kennedy and Brian Santry both chipped in with one goal each for Swampscott. Swampscott is now 9-7.Marblehead 8, Danvers 7At Danvers, Marblehead held a slim 5-3 lead at the half, but was able to fend off the pesky Falcons. Leading the way for the Marblehead attack was Ian Maag (3 goals, 2 assists). The rest of the goal scorers for Marblehead were: Jacob Maselek, (2 goals); Trevor Jones, (1 goal); Brad Knittle, (1 goal) and Alex Conn, (1 goal). Marblehead is now 12-3.
