LYNN – A Lynn District Court judge ordered a Mattapan man held without bail Thursday after police arrested him in connection with a shooting on South Common Street Wednesday evening.Assistant District Attorney Erin Bellavia told Judge Stacey Fortes-White Thursday afternoon that numerous witnesses positively identified Terrence Johnson, 29, of 449 Norfolk St., as one of two men fleeing the scene of the shooting, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. at 118 S. Common St. near the intersection of Shepard Street. Johnson is charged with assault with intent to murder, disorderly conduct and violating the city?s knife ordinance. One witness told police she heard three men fighting, followed by two gunshots before Johnson and another man allegedly ran away, Bellavia said. The gunshot victim, 19-year-old Antonio Pacheco, of Lynn, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Lynn Police incident report.Police found Johnson hiding under a porch on Huss Court not long after the shooting occurred, according to the report. He was captured and arrested after a brief foot chase.Witnesses gave officers descriptions of two men who fled from the shooting, and what direction they went in, according to the incident report. A second bullet was found in an upstairs apartment at 114 S. Common St., but no weapon has been recovered, other than a 3-inch knife found in Johnson?s possession. One witness told police in an interview that he saw Johnson and another man having a conversation about Pacheco as they walked along Shepard Street Wednesday, according to a report. The witness said the second man told Johnson, “We?ll take care of this,”and then they went over to Pacheco. The witness said he heard two pops and saw Pacheco fall to the ground, according to the report, and then the two men fled.A second witness positively identified Johnson as one of two black males who ran past his car toward Huss Court shortly after he heard gunfire, according to another incident report.Johnson?s attorney, Kenneth Shutzer of Lynn, argued that the prosecution did not have sufficient evidence that Johnson was involved in the shooting, only that he was in the area at the time of the shooting.?I?d like the court to be aware that short of additional information going forward, I?m not sure the Commonwealth has probable cause for a (dangerousness hearing),” Shutzer said.Fortes-White ruled that there was probable cause to hold Johnson, and he will remain at Middleton Jail pending a hearing scheduled for May 24, the judge said.Taylor Provost can be reached at [email protected].
