May 18, 2012 by Taylor Provost

SAUGUS – Police arrested a Saugus man Wednesday afternoon who allegedly broke into a Western Avenue home and stole jewelry, and then told police he saw someone else commit the crime, according to a Saugus Police report. When Saugus Police arrived on Western Avenue for reports of a man with a dog breaking into a house, Michael T. Cappiello, 23, of 39 Summit Ave., Saugus, told them he had seen a red-haired man named Chris commit the crime, and had followed him into the house to “chase him away” according to the report. Cappiello had a pit bull on a leash with him at the time, the report said.Officers initially sent Cappiello on his way following the interview, and then interviewed the witness who had called 911 to report the break-in. The witness said he had only seen one man, who he believed to be Cappiello, enter the house through a side window.?At no time did (he) ever see anyone enter or exit [the house] with red hair,” Officer Matthew Donahue wrote in the report.Police again approached Cappiello, who was still walking in the area of Western Avenue, and attempted to pat him down for weapons. Cappiello then told police he had “found some heroin” and was coming to give it to them, the report said. Officers found six to eight individual bags of heroin in his pocket, and charged him with Class A drug possession as well as felony breaking and entering in the daytime.Judge Stacey Fortes-White set Cappiello?s bail at $750, but revoked his bail on a breaking and entering charge from earlier this year, during a hearing in Lynn District Court Thursday afternoon. He will return for a pre-trial hearing May 30.Taylor Provost can be reached at [email protected].
