Roundup: Marblehead girls score game-winner late against Peabody

As far as classics go, the Magicians and Tanners played a gem in high school girls lacrosse at Marblehead Wednesday night. With just three seconds remaining before the final whistle, Eliza Quigley took a pass from Caroline Helmes and fired in the winning goal to give Marblehead a 13-12 win.”It was an exciting win for us as we finish up our season,” said Marblehead coach Annie Pugh. “We were able to finish the season undefeated in the NEC and look forward to finding out our place in the state tournament.”Meggie Collins led Marblehead with six goals while teammate Tyler Phillips finished with three goals and a helper. Kiley Fischer chipped in with two goals and two assists for the Magicians.”That was as great a game as I can remember but we unfortunately came out on the wrong end,” said Peabody coach Dennis Desroches. “That was a great finish but it is a tough loss.”Nicole and Sarah Napolitano led the Tanners with two goals apiece. Courtney Smith finished with a hat trick in the loss.BOYS LACROSSEPeabody 15, Malden Catholic 3At Malden Catholic, the Tanners led 5-0 at the half. Peabody did not surrender a goal until the fourth quarter. Nick Salalayko and Joey Brennan anchored the Peabody defense. Kiefer Heckman had a monster performance for the Tanners (5 goals, 7 assists). Nick Ouellette also helped out (6 goals). Ryan Wolff (1 goal, 4 assists) and Anthony Robinson (2 goals) had strong performances for Peabody. Peabody finished the season at 8-10.Hamilton-Wenham 14, Swampscott 7At Hamilton-Wenham, Swampscott coach Josh Field praised his team’s performance.”My team played their hearts out today. They had a very admirable performance and I cannot be any more proud of my team,” Field said.Swampscott was down 8-6 after three quarters. It was 8-6 with just over four minutes left in the game, but Swampscott just ran out of gas at the end. Matt Gambale led the Big Blue (5 goals). Billy Valle and Josh Rothwell scored one goal each for Swampscott. Max Cohen was strong in net for Swampscott (14 saves). Tony Silva anchored the Swampscott defense. Swampscott finished the season at 9-9.Northeast 6, Tech 1At Northeast, Tech’s lone goal came from Jeremy Quinton. Rob Miele was solid in net once again for Tech (14 saves). Tech finished the season at 5-11.St. John’s 15, Medfield 12The Eagles (9-9) got three-goal games from Andrew Gallahue, Jack Sharrio and Drew O’Connell while qualifying for the tournament. Already assured a spot because of a guaranteed second place division finish, the win propelled St. John’s to the desired .500 record.Marblehead 13, Dracut 1At Marblehead, Jacob Maselek led Marblehead (4 goals, 2 assists). The rest of the Marblehead goal scorers were: Ian Maag (2 goals, 1 assist); Dean Fader (2 goals, 1 assist); Trevor Jones (2 goals); Trevor Gelineau (2 goals, 2 assists) and Zach Cuzner (1 goal). Marblehead is now 14-4.Whittier 12, Lynn 2At Whittier, Lynn found itself down 7-2 at the half. Jarred Chen scored all of Lynn’s goals. Lynn lost its starting goalie in the first quarter due to an injury. Senior Seth Manville filled in to play his last-ever high school game in net for the first time in his career (10 saves). Lynn finished the season at 2-14.Track and FieldPeabody 101, Beverly 32At Peabody, the Tanners (7-0) clinched the NEC North crown behind two double winners. Zachary Grube (110h – 15.1, High Jump – 6 feet) and Thomas Drover (400m – 53.4, Javelin – 158 feet) both had impressive days.
