LYNNFIELD – Dinyce Peters, along with family and friends, are preparing to hold the 2012 P-Money One Pitch Softball Tournament, which raises money for the Alexander Peters Memorial Fund, Inc., a registered 501(c3) charity.?We used to say my son was money when he pitched, so we call it P-Money,” Peters said and laughed. The fund gives the money to other charities, including MADD, and also pays for two scholarships that are given each year to Lynnfield High School graduates, she said. The $1,000 scholarships are given each year to a senior boy and a senior girl who are also athletes, Peters said.?Basically the athletes who are not going to get a whole bunch of scholarship money,” she said, when asked about whom the scholarships go to. “We don?t want to give it to somebody who already gets a lot of scholarships.”They raise money by having people pay to enter teams that compete in the tournament. This year?s event will be held on Saturday, June 23 at Lynnfield High School, starting at 8 a.m., Peters said. It?s a family-friendly event with free food and raffles, and there are T-shirts and wristbands with her son?s name and date of birth emblazoned on them.Anyone interested in participating can visit www.alexanderpetersmemorialfund.com to get information or to sign up for the tournament.Donations can be made directly to the Alexander Peters Memorial Fund c/o Eastern Bank, 46 Salem St., Lynnfield, MA 01940.Peters and her family have been heartened by the turnout, noting that usually several hundred people participate, including her son?s friends, parents of her son?s friends, and former classmates of his at Malden Catholic and Lynnfield High School.?It is very heartwarming, the first year I was so overwhelmed,” she said. “I felt we were the richest family in town, not the kids from It?s a Wonderful Life,” she said. The tournaments have raised about $12,000 since they started, Peters said.Jeff McMenemy can be reached at [email protected].
