BEVERLY – The Lynn Babe Ruth 15-year-old all-star team went 1-for-2 this weekend, beating Swampscott, 10-0, Saturday at Cooney Field but falling to Peabody, 11-8, at Balch Field. The Lynners are in the beginning stages of their District 1 regional tournament, which is in a pool play format. They play next Saturday against Wakefield at Cooney.Saturday, it was all Lynn as pitcher Cullen Dunnigan survived a shaky first inning, in which he loaded the bases on a single and two walks before getting the third out, to dominate Swampscott from then on.Swampscott, which joined the Babe Ruth program this year and put a team in the 15-year-old tournament without much practice, kept the Lynners off the scoreboard the first two innings. But Lynn erupted for five runs in the third inning – one of two five-run frames. The game lasted only five innings due to the Babe Ruth 10-run rule.”Once we got going, we were relentless,” said Lynn manager Jeff Earp. “We have a lot of speed, and we run. That’s what we do. Hopefully, we put pressure on the other team to make mistakes.”That’s basically what happened Saturday. Lynn batted around in the third inning and scored its five runs on only three hits. The only legitimate RBI in the inning came off the bat of Brad Dill, who singled in Chris Lessard, who had walked and stolen second. The other four runs came on two wild pitches and two errors.Lynn completed the 10-run win in the fifth with five more runs. Damien Earp knocked in two of them with a single, and Kyle O’Connor – who was a starter for the Lynn English varsity this season – doubled to left to score two more. The final run came home on an error.Peabody 11, Lynn 8Sunday at Balch it was a different story entirely, as Lynn gave up seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to hand the game to Peabody, according to Earp.”There were just defensive breakdowns everywhere,” he said. “And that’s very uncharacteristic of us. We have our work cut out for us.”Bright spots for Lynn included Lessard, who pitched well; and the hitting of O’Connor, Dill and Brent Lozzi.13-year-oldsLynn 16, Revere 0At Twi Field in Danvers in the 13-year-old District 1 regionals, Antonio Felix went three innings and Andrew Moccia two more in the abbreviated game (10-run rule).”Our bats were talking,” Lynn manager Steve Moccia said. “Everybody did well. All 15 kids in our lineup contributed.”Matt Lauria had two hits for Lynn.”It was one of those games,” Moccia said. “The pitching was good, hitting was good and the defense was good. It was good to start that way, but it’s only one game. On to the next one, now.”All the Babe Ruth tournaments use the pool play format now. Lynn’s next game is Thursday (5) at Danvers against Peabody. All games in the tournament are at Twi Field. In Babe Ruth, the winner of the District 1 regional goes into the state tournament.Steve Krause can be reached at [email protected].
