With a loss to Saugus National in a losers’ bracket game on Sunday, 9-1, the Swampscott Little League squad saw its District 16 campaign come to a close.”I give Saugus National credit,” Swampscott manager Rob Hopkins said. “They played a good game. They made plays in the field for their pitcher.”Swampscott, meanwhile, struggled defensively, with Saugus National scoring six unearned runs.Saugus scored two runs in the first inning on a two-out error, then added six in the fourth on what Hopkins said were “multiple errors” with two out.Swampscott had actually taken a 1-0 lead on a home run by Dominic Codispoti.Hopkins also praised his pitcher, Jordan Cox, saying, “He did his job. He really did. He pitched his heart out, had some strikeouts and induced a whole bunch of ground balls.”In the top of the sixth, Swampscott looked to have something going when Codispoti hit a leadoff single and Colin Frary hit a shot on which Codispoti tried to go from first to third. However, the left fielder gunned down Codispoti at third.”It was just one of those games for us,” Hopkins said, adding, “Sometimes the cookie doesn’t crumble.”A day earlier, Swampscott defeated Peabody National, 8-3, at Saugus American. Frary pitched five innings for the win, Cox came in for 20 pitches and Luke Marshall got the save. Codispoti (RBI double), Marshall, Dan Johnson (2-run bases-loaded single) and Steve Santanello (RBI single) all impressed at the plate.Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
