LYNN – Hitting the first home run (a grand slam, no less) of his baseball “career”, Shawn Sarrette sparked the Wyoma A’s to a 13-1 Lynn City Series win over the East Lynn Cardinals Monday at Wyoma.East Lynn’s bid for the crown is over. Sean Leydon’s West Lynn Red Sox face Peter Dawson’s Pine Hill Reds today, and on Wednesday, Lynn Shore battles Wyoma. The score stood 1-1 yesterday as sharp defense and pinpoint pitching impressed the Reinfuss Field crowd heading into the top of the fourth. Then came some explosive offense. Wyoma’s Matt Tansey and Bobby Alcock each drew walks, followed by a bunt single by Christian Dimeglio. The table was now set for an unsung hero. Sarrette zeroed in on Cardinal hurler Emile Rossi’s pitch, slightly high, swinging hard, making perfect contact.”I never hit a home run before in my life?never, ever?so I put my head down as usual and ran fast and hard to first base. I never saw the ball go out. I didn’t even know I had a home run until our first base coach (Tony Luciano) yelled to me, ‘hey, slow down,'” Sarrette said.Sarrette said the East Lynn left fielder just stood there (and stared back) without the ball. He said he then saw his teammates cheering and knew it was a home run. The players all ran out of the dugout and waited for him at home plate.”It was the biggest thrill I’ve ever had in baseball,” Sarrette said.Sarrette was quick to spread the credit for the win around.”We got great hitting and fielding from A.J. Luciano and great pitching from Dax Billingsley and Bobby Alcock,” he said.Luciano banged out four hits and fielded like a major leaguer at shortstop. The Sarrette slammer made the score 5-1 moving into the fifth. A’s catcher Quinn Brinkler singled and rode home on Tansey’s long double. Sarrette came up again and walloped a single for his fifth RBI of the day. Luciano connected for another safety and Zach Elwell hit a deep drive to Sarrette’s home run spot for a double and a 9-1 lead. Steady Anthony Nikolakakis bashed a two-run double to put the game out of reach.Billingsley was the winning pitcher with Bobby Alcock going the final two innings. Alcock was superb, snuffing out the Cards and piling up six K’s in two frames. This was nothing new, though, as he was a human pitching strikeout machine for Wyoma in the all-star tournament. Alcock gave credit to his coaches, especially his father, Bob Alcock.Manager Jim Mitchell’s EL champs (repeats from last year) never gave up, but scored only in the third by loading the bases when Adan Jalal, Jonha Hodgdon and Kevin Depena each walked. Emile Rossi batted in a run with a hard hit.
