Wyoma defeats Shore in City Series matchup

Bob Keaney

July 26, 2012 by Bob Keaney

LYNN – Now we know why the Wyoma team is called the “A’s.”Yesterday, the “A” stood for A.J., Anthony and Alcock, as in A.J. Luciano, Anthony Nikolakakis and Bobby Alcock. This A-Team trio led Wyoma to a 15-2 victory over the Lynn Shore White Sox in City Series action at Wyoma. The A’s play again Thursday against the West Lynn American Red Sox, with the winner taking on the unbeaten Pine Hill Reds on Saturday.Shore opened fast as usual when Zach Elwell and Dax Billingsley each singled and rode home on a hard double by Anthony Nikolakakis.Lynn Shore, a 20-1 team during the season (its only loss was to Paul Hartford’s squad), bounced back in its half to make it 2-2 thanks to a Hubert Martinez double and hits by Dayshon Anderson and Elias McDonald, plus alert running. This is where the A Team came through. Luciano, the slick shortstop, knocked in Wyoma’s go-ahead run in the second inning with a solid rap for a 3-2 lead, then stole second and hustled across the plate on an Elwell single. Billingsley added an RBI double to make it 5-2. Nikolakakis bashed a single for a 6-2 lead.Alcock earned his A Grade in the third with a hard smash that set up two shocking developments for Matt Tansey. One was Tansey’s first-ever home run that thrilled the crowd: a 3-run blast over the centerfield fence. The other shock for Tansey was having a coach throw a bucket of cold water on him in celebration of his homer. The rest of the third inning saw Luciano running like a marathoner in the London Olympics for an infield hit; an RBI hit by Nikolakakis; and a solid RBI single by Quinn Brinkler, the A’s ace catcher. It was suddenly 12-2, and looking bleak for the well-coached Shoremen, who were undermanned as two standouts could not make the game.Chris Kelly, son of Lynn Police Lieutenant Chris Kelly, a former baseball standout himself, was outstanding on the bases and with the bat, and Brinkler added another late-game hit. Luciano was everywhere also, taking over mound duties with a brilliant performance, including two strikeouts.
