It was a busy weekend at Gannon in both the men’s and women’s club championship rounds. On the men’s side, Mike Cole defeated Jay Fiste on the 20th hole of a playoff and advanced to play Ben Friedman, who defeated his brother, James Friedman, on the 17th hole.”It was difficult to play against my brother,” James Friedman said on Sunday. “It’s hard to play with someone you care about so much. He came out on top.”Older brother Ben Friedman, 30, and James Friedman, 25, both learned to play through their father, Howard, who, while he doesn’t play any more, was described by James as a good golfer in his playing days. When the brothers faced off on the 17th hole, James Friedman was two down and said, “I knew I would probably need a birdie to extend it.” Looking to make a 160-foot shot under a tree, his ball caught a branch, “kicked a little bit to the right and pretty much wrapped up the match,” he said. The final match will be held on Aug. 12 at 7:30 a.m. Ben Friedman and Cole must play 36 holes for the final. On the women’s side, Ann Dawson defeated Jane Fiste on the 18th hole to win the main flight club championship, and Chris Lynch defeated Julie Lombara on the 18th hole to win the net flight club championship.Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
