Overcoming an early deficit, the Marblehead Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-stars defeated Central Maine, 11-8, at Westfield on Saturday in New England Regional play.Marblehead trailed Maine 6-0 after two innings. Yet after four innings, it was a 6-6 game and Crew Whittier pulled his team ahead for good when, in the fifth inning, he came up with runners on second and third and hit a two-run ground-rule double.The ball hopped the fence at the 350-foot mark and was “probably one of the longest hits I’ve ever seen a 13-year-old hit,” manager Dana Brothers said. “It would have been out of almost every field we have in Marblehead.”Whittier also came on from the fourth inning onward, giving up only two runs over the last four innings.Marblehead had lost to New Milford, Conn., 10-0, on Friday.Today Marblehead plays Western Mass. champ Pittsfield at noon at Westfield.Rich Tenorio can be reached at [email protected].
