NAHANT – It took the Nahant Woman?s Club 180 hotdogs to feed the 101 girls and 15 chaperones at the annual Girls Inc. Outing Wednesday afternoon, but the biggest pull for the young girls were the desserts.Lynn seniors Catherine Lundergan and Nan Travers had baked trays of large cookies, brownies and whoopie pies for the event at the home of Nahant philanthropist Nancy Whitman, who has hosted the cookout for Girls Inc. every summer for the last 10 years.?A lot of the children haven?t seen homemade desserts,” said Wendy Payne, club president. “At least three kids today have asked if there are going to be homemade brownies.”View a photo gallery. In addition to the sweet treats and the hotdogs donated by Old Neighborhood Foods, club board members served up watermelon, oranges, apples, pickles and rice to the girls. Payne said they make sure to serve the nutritional foods before the kids made a beeline for the desserts.Bianca Felizfiguereo, 8, said dessert is her favorite part of the day. “I?m really excited because I don?t get to do something like this because my mom is usually working,” she said while munching on a chocolate cupcake.Belle Marquez, 10, ran for the table and said, “I?m going up for seconds!” She said she had one cookie and one cupcake, and decided “The cookie was better.”Travers and Lundergan said they often bake for Nahant events. “It?s the least we can do,” said Travers. “We think Nancy is doing such a wonderful job.”Payne said the Woman?s Club continues to contribute to Girls Inc. because they share the same message of empowering women. “We try to do as much as we can,” said Payne. “It?s a way that we can give back. The girls absolutely love it and look forward to it.”Maria Manzueta, Elementary School Program Director at Girls Inc., said the outing at Whitman?s beachside home fit perfectly into this year?s summer program “Animals Under the Sea” theme. “We pick a day that?s low tide and the girls go in and play,” said Manzueta. The girls collected information from the beach like weather and temperature, and noted on what they found in the tide pools for a poster that they will present to their families at the end-of-summer picnic at Salem Willows on Friday.?They?re so well-behaved, and that?s a credit to Girls Inc.,” said Whitman. “It?s a program that works.”Girls Inc. planned to head back to Girls Inc. headquarters in Lynn around 3 p.m., when Whitman said she and the other ladies would “collapse on the deck” with a pitcher of sangria.?We put them on the bus with an Eskimo pie and say goodbye,” said Whitman.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
