NAHANT – Nahant Fire Chief Edward Hyde said a fire at 131 Wilson Road Thursday night may have been accidentally caused by workmen who were working in the four-unit apartment building earlier that day.Hyde said the fire caused mostly smoke damage in the building except for in one apartment, where firefighters caused significant damage when they were forced to rip apart the walls and ceilings to “chase the fire” to get it under control. Hyde said the fire started around 8 p.m. and was under control in about an hour.Hyde said he was impressed with how 12 firefighters were able to control the fire, especially since they were shorthanded one engine due to it being out for maintenance. “It was very stubborn,” said Hyde. “The guys did a good job of getting in and stopping it. They did a heck of a job.”Hyde said the fire is still under investigation. “There is nothing suspicious in nature at this time,” said Hyde.Hyde said that no mutual aid was called to the scene, and neither was anyone treated.Kat Powers, Director of Communications for American Red Cross, said the fire displaced five people, three dogs and two cats, one of which went missing after the fire. Powers said the residents of that building are being provided with lodging, emergency food and clothing, plus three blankets, comfort kits with toothbrush and washcloth, and smoke packs to get the smell of smoke out of their belongings.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
