The Lynnfield High volleyball team put on a clinic in its season opener against Wilmington, as the Pioneers defeated the Wildcats 3-0 at Wilmington on Wednesday.The Pioneers started the season out on the right foot (25-5, 25-15, 25-14). Lynnfield’s senior captains, outside hitter Caroline Shannon and setter Abby Norwood, set the tone for the Pioneers. Shannon recorded six aces and six kills, and Norwood recorded four aces, 10 assists and seven kills. Danvers coach Jeff Avigian was happy with his team’s performance.”My team started a little slow to start the season but it was good to see them play so well today. It is always good to get the first win of the season in the books,” Avigian said.Wes Millbury at number four, Kevin Anderson at number five, and Zach Tarricone at number eight all won their matches in impressive fashion (8-1). Danvers improves its record to 1-2.GIRLS CROSS COUNTRYLynnfield 19, Amesbury 41At Lynnfield, the Pioneers, who are coming off an 8-3 season, got off to a winning start by taking the top three spots overall. Lexi Buonfiglio finished first on the 2.95-mile course with a 19:33, followed by Tia Patterson (19:47) and Angelica Kartsounis (20:16). Mia DeLuccia, coming off an injury, finished sixth overall (21:35).BOYS CROSS COUNTRYLynnfield 20, Amesbury 41At Lynnfield, senior captain Andrew Drinkwater took first (16:46) on the 2.95-mile course. Chase Davidson finished second (17:21); David Astrofsky, fourth (18:14) and George Kartsounis, sixth (18:32).
