It was a tale of two halves when the Lynnfield boys soccer team tied Gloucester, 1-1, at Lynnfield on Thursday.Gloucester dominated the first half and Lynnfield returned the favor in the second half. Gloucester struck first 20 minutes into the game to go up 1-0. The score stayed that way until there were 10 minutes left. Lynnfield tied the game on a Mike Demarchian goal assisted by Blake Strader. The Pioneers defense played strong as a whole. Lynnfield is now 0-0-1.FIELD HOCKEYPeabody 5, Gloucester 1At Gloucester, the Tanners (1-0) opened up strong, with Joanne Frangias and Dana Collins each scoring two goals and Callie Soumas adding the other. Frangias’ second goal, with 22 seconds left in the game, came on a picture-perfect reverse stick flick. Goalie Holly Smith had six saves for the win. The Tanners finished 10-5-3 last year, losing in the first round of the state tournament.Marblehead 1, Danvers 0At Marblehead, the Magicians (1-0) pulled out the win despite an excellent game by Danvers (0-1) goalie Gabi Torchia. The Falcons couldn’t get the offense going, although they did get a great defensive effort from Hanna Salmonsen and Paige Fravel (who came in for an injured player at sweeper). Abby Nye scored the game-winning goal for the Magicians 15 minutes into the first half with Liz Nuccio getting the assist. Marblehead is coming off a 10-5-4 season.Swampscott 6, Revere 0At Swampscott, the Big Blue jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half. Tori Thistle scored the first two goals for Swampscott, and she added two assists. Julianne Marquis added one goal and one assist for the Big Blue (1-0).VOLLEYBALLBishop Fenwick 3, Cardinal Spellman 0At Brockton, the Crusaders (2-0) won 25-17, 25-16, 25-15, with strong play from juniors Tessa McLaughlin (21 assists), Gianna Pizzano (14 kills) and Olivia Morsey (27 digs).Matignon 3, St. Mary’s 1At Matignon, the Spartans (0-1) struggled with the serve in their season opener despite strong overall play by Taylor Faieta. Emily Geaney served well. Matignon won 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18.
