MALDEN – The English football team used two Isaiah Davis touchdown runs late in the third quarter to pull away from the Golden Tornadoes of Malden Saturday at Macdonald Stadium.The weather was perfect for football and for English (3-2), so was the outcome. The Bulldogs won by a convincing 35-12 score.Malden (1-4) kept the game close despite being unable to mount a long, consistent drive. The Bulldogs were able to finally cash in after missing chances in the first half.With English holding a 13-12 lead, the Bulldogs reached the Tornadoes’ 18-yard line before Davis took a handoff to the left and cut inside while outracing several Malden defenders to the end zone. Chris Lessard added the extra point.After Malden unsuccessfully faked a punt near midfield, the Bulldogs took over at the Malden 48. On the next play, Davis scampered along the left sideline to give English a 26-12 advantage. Lessard was able to add the two-point conversion after a broken play led to Lessard scrambling past the goal line.”We thought the left side was open,” said English coach Peter Holey. “We spread them out and Isaiah ran angry.”The first half was filled with turnovers. There were five, including three by English. Both teams were only able to score a touchdown apiece off these turnovers.After Malden knotted the game at six, English received the ball with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs were able to cross midfield when senior wide receiver Josh Batista (one receiving touchdown) caught a 15-yard pass from junior quarterback D.J. Mullen. Batista was injured on the play. On the next play, sophomore wide receiver Lucas Harris took a screen pass and broke a couple of tackles before he scored to give English an advantage it would never relinquish.”Josh has a knee injury. His status is yet to be determined,” said Holey.When Malden got the ball to start the second half, junior running back Ray Sainristill scampered 69 yards for a touchdown. The Tornadoes’ field-goal team came on for the extra point, but Malden called a timeout. When play resumed, the offense trotted back onto the field. Sainristill stumbled to the 4-yard line after taking a toss from quarterback Jake Martino.Junior halfback Zach Lozzi tacked on the final score when he had a 42-yard touchdown jaunt in the fourth quarter.Mullen was 9-of-11 for 188 yards and two touchdown tosses. Davis had 134 yards rushing.The Tornadoes were led by Sainristill (93 yards rushing). Wide receiver Paul Kiernan had Malden’s other score.English displayed its big-play capability. All but one of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns were from beyond the 40-yard line.
