Roundup: English boys soccer defeats Saugus

With a second-half rally, the English boys soccer team defeated Saugus, 3-1, at Saugus on Monday.English (4-3-4) got two goals by Leo Awokang. Richard Charles also scored a goal.English trailed the Sachems 1-0 at halftime.”Their goalie made some great saves,” Lynn English head coach Kerry King said. “We were a little snakebitten.”Freshman goalie Kyle Arsenault notched his first career victory with four saves.”He played very solid,” said King.St. John’s Prep 3, Danvers 1At Danvers, the Eagles (10-1) handed Danvers its first loss of the season behind senior Brooks Clark’s two goals. Junior Matt Chiltin potted the other goal. Goalie Ben Alpern had four saves. St. John’s led 2-0 at the half before both squads traded goals in the second half.Peabody 3, Gloucester 2At Peabody, the Tanners (6-1-2) scored three times in the second half to come back and defeat the Fishermen. Shawn Bernardo provided the late-game heroics with a goal. C.J. Alimonte and Tommy Drover had the other goals for Peabody.Salem 2, Swampscott 1At Salem, the Witches’ Jason Alas scored the game-winner on a late penalty kick. The game was scoreless at halftime. Alex Carvajal opened the scoring for Salem (6-2-1). Swampscott (1-8-2) got its goal from Kendrick Simpson to tie the game before Alas’ heroics.Beverly 5, Winthrop 0At Beverly, Conor Leahy (3 goals, 2 assists) helped the Panthers roll over Winthrop. Beverly is now 6-3-2. Cam Rogers and Elias Cadena poured in the other goals for Beverly. The Tigers had two goalies who pitched a shutout. Justin Carnavale played in net in the first half while Sean Hanlon continued the strong play in the second half.GIRLS SOCCERSaugus 5, English 0At Manning Field, the Sachems improved to 5-4-1. Amanda Poussard scored the game-winning goal in the first half. In the second half, the game belonged to Saugus. Jackie Russo, Olivia Turgeon, and Mikyla Pirella (2 goals) provided the scoring for the Sachems.”We just scored and finished,” said Saugus head coach Chris Coviello about the second-half surge. “We missed a few shots in the first half, but the English goalie made some really good saves.”Goalie Andrea Davis had a few key stops for Saugus.Salem 2, Swampscott 2At Swampscott, Salem scored with five minutes left to even the score. Erin Cassidy and Emily Cerra notched the goals for Swampscott (5-2-3). Samantha Rizzo had five saves for Swampscott.Swampscott had a 2-0 advantage at halftime, but it couldn’t hold off the Witches.”They were just more prepared for the game than we were,” said Swampscott head coach Francesco Recchia.Peabody 6, Gloucester 0At Peabody, the Tanners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. Hayley Dowd, Victoria Digiacomo, and Madison Doherty each had two goals. Caitlin Lodi and Kristina Sholds provided the shutout. At 9-0, Peabody clinched a spot in the MIAA Tournament. The Tanners currently sit at the top of the Northeastern Conference.KIPP 1, Salem Academy 0At Lynn, Mariangeliz Calvarone scored the lone goal. Goalie Briana Collins had 10 saves. Collins recorded a shutout in all but one game this year.Beverly 6, Winthrop 1At Winthrop, the Panthers marched out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. Caitlin Harty led Beverly with a hat trick. Eva Gourdeau, Meggie Manzo, and Sarah Visnick had a goal apiece. All of the goals were scored in the first half.GOLFSt. Mary’s 163, Cardinal Spellman 105At Lynn, the Spartans’ (11-1) Chris Price led the team with 29 points. Shawn MacBurnie (26 points), Richard McDonald (26), Chris Butler (23), Ryan Madden (21), and Ryan Borders (20) were all critical contributors in the victory.FIELD HOCKEYDanvers 1, Saugus 1At Saugus, Caitlin McBride tied the game with a goal in the second half to lead Danvers to a tie.With the game knotted at halftime, Saugus scored a minute and a half into the second half.
