Golf: St. Mary’s wins, English, Classical fall

The Classical golf team fell to Swampscott Thursday, 43-29, at Gannon, but not before Eric Brazell defeated the Big Blue’s No. 1 golfer.Brazell eked out a win over Swampscott’s Trevor Massey, 5-4. Three other Rams halved their matches: Mark Brazell (against Swampscott’s Anthony Springthorpe), Russ Holmes (with Peter Wright) and Mac St. Ives (with Cameron Swiger).Swampscott’s winners were Kevin Marescalchi at No. 2 (7-2), Victoria Malatesta (7-2), Griffin Hunt (51/2-31/2) and Noah Maercklein (6-3).Swampscott is 10-4 overall and 5-4 in the Northeastern Conference/Small. Classical is 3-11.Marblehead 60, English 12At Tedesco Country Club, the Magicians had excellent performances from Connor Green (37) at No. 1 and Pitch Riley at No 2 (36). Both shot a 36. English’s Mathieu Bruneau played well for the Bulldogs, finishing with a 42. He lost at No. 3 to Owen Picariello (39). English is 1-11.Charlie Thompson also had a 39 for the 9-0 Magicians.St. Marys 153 Fenwick, 142At Fenwick, Ryan Madden led the way with 28 points and Dan Donovan and Kevin Dusablon scored 24 each in the final group to pull out a come-from-behind victory.The Spartans are at Gannon Monday against Arlington Catholic with a share of the Catholic Central League title on the line.Lynnfield 157,Amesbury 154At Amesbury Country Club, the match was tied after the first six players, making it necessary to go the seven spot where Alex Smyrnios’ 18 points pushed the Pioneers over the top. Nick Eliopoulos led Lynnfield with 28 points; Kris Houda, 25 points; Mike Waisnor, 23 points, Andrew Waisnor, 22 points; Matt Boehner, 21 points, and Eric Kerr, 20 points.St. John’s 239,St. John’s (S) 244At Salem CC, St. John’s lost to The Pioneers of Shrewsbury earlier this season. The Eagles got redemption because of senior Dave Bornstein (shot 1-over 37).The Eagles were down two shots before Bornstein finished his round. Once Bornstein finished, St. John’s had a five shot lead in the match. Josh Wingardner (38), Steven Dilisio (39) and Brandon Bingle (39) all had solid performances for St. John’s (13-3).Peabody 411/2, Saugus 301/2At The Meadows in Peabody, the Tanners, 8-3, got wins from Athan Goulos (51/2-31/2), Matt Correale (6-3), Steve Ferrante (6-3), Patrick McCarthy (6-3) and Matt McIsaac (5-4).Beverly 481/2Gloucester 231/2At Beverly Golf & Tennis, No. 2 Sam Shorr won his match, 8-1, as did No. 8 Tom Lingran in his first varsity match, 6-3.Beverly is 12-1-1, 9-0 in the NEC.Danvers 431/2-Salem 281/2At Olde Salem Greens, Kyle Dohertry, Salem’s No. 4, won 6-3.Steve Krause can be reached at [email protected].
