Swampscott Classics By The Sea Car Show Sunday at Linscott Park

October 12, 2012 by Kait Taylor

SWAMPSCOTT – Linscott Park will become a parking lot once again this year as car owners show off their wheels at the Swampscott Classics By the Sea Car Show on Sunday.Recreation Director Danielle Strauss said if the weather is fair, there will be hundreds of “classic” cars on the green on Monument Avenue, with everything from the 1930s to right out of the showroom. Whether they bring a car or not, attendees will be able to check out the cars from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. before voting for winners in categories like Best in Show, Best Paint Job and Best Tuner Car. Owners will also vote on a separate ballot and the winners receive trophies.Strauss said the intent is to have just a “fun community day” with a relaxed atmosphere. “The car enthusiasts make the day for themselves,” she said. “I think these people just like to walk around and look at the different cars and take lots of pictures.”Organizer Doug Dubin said the “classic” cars will include “high exotic,” pre-war vehicles, and brand new Mustangs, Camaros and Dodge Challengers. Now in its second year, what began as an impromptu event has blossomed into a fundraiser for the community, with $10 suggested donations for My Brother?s Table. Strauss said last year former Town Administrator Andrew Maylor gave her a month to put together a car show. “Needless to say I was horrified,” she said. “I had never done a car show before, so I was making calls and Google-ing everything I could think of, but low and behold, on the day the cars just kept coming.”Strauss said last year there were 150 cars and she expects more this year after receiving a call that the Danvers car show will be canceled. Dubin said there are 70 cars coming from Marblehead and Swampscott alone, but between the three car clubs on the North Shore, there could be 200 or more on Sunday.Strauss said there will be town athletic groups selling chili and hot dogs. The event will not go on in the event of rain and there will be no rain date. There is no fee for the event. “Just show up and enjoy yourself,” said Strauss.Kait Taylor can be reached at [email protected].
