MARBLEHEAD ? No one expected this. The Marblehead High football team scored three touchdowns over a span of 1:51 in the first quarter and blasted Div. 1 foe Malden Catholic, 46-0, Friday night, in a non-conference game at Piper Field. The Magicians (6-0) scored on their first offensive possession, and then quickly turned two fumbles by the Lancers (2-4) into touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead just 6:06 into the game.Marblehead’s defense held Malden Catholic to just 101 total yards. The Lancers didn’t cross midfield until the fourth quarter, and never made it past the Magicians’ 38-yard line.”Obviously, things went our way. Their starting quarterback (Lynn’s Brendan Tobey) was injured and we caught some lucky breaks with the turnovers early in the game,” Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff said.Zac Cuzner (86 yards-8 carries) and Brooks Tyrrell (81 yards-10 carries) scored two rushing touchdowns apiece, while Jeremy Gillis and Spencer Craig added one score each on the ground. Quarterback Ian Maag also threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Nick Perry.Gillis ran 23 yards to cap off Marblehead’s first drive, a quick 61-yard march. Malden Catholic fumbled three plays later, and Tyrrell ran 20 yards for the Magicians’ second score. The Lancers coughed up the ball again on their next drive, and Maag found Perry down the middle of the field to put Marblehead ahead by three touchdowns with 4:54 left in the first quarter. The Magicians scored on their next drive, as well, though it took them nearly five minutes. Maag connected with Perry again for a 23-yard gain and then hit Gillis for 10 more yards to set up a 4-yard run by Tyrrell that made the score 28-0 at halftime.Marblehead scored again on its first possession the second half, with Cuzner following a 50-yard run with a 2-yard touchdown on the next play. Another Malden Catholic fumble led to another touchdown, with Maag hooking up twice with Dylan Cressy (team-high 57 yards receiving on 3 catches) for 18 yards and then 34 yards on a bubble screen to the 1-yard line. Cuzner plowed in on the first play of the fourth quarter to make the score 40-0.Behind the running of Ben Anderson and Craig, the Magicians tacked on another score on the final play of the game, a 10-yard run by Craig.
