SAUGUS – The Saugus Police welcomed its newest assistant chief Thursday as Chief Domenic DiMella appointed Lt. Ronald Giorgetti to the position.?I appreciate the confidence the chief has in his selection, and I look forward to working with him and to meet his objectives and mission statements for the Police Department,” said Giorgetti.Giorgetti will now be second-in-command of the department and will be responsible for everything from internal affairs to the budget.DiMella appointed Giorgetti in a packed second-floor conference room Thursday morning, as more than 20 fellow police officers and other department staff squeezed in to watch and enjoy coffee and pastries.?He?s just done a great job since he?s been here throughout his career,” said DiMella. “I rely on him for a lot and he gets it done, and gets it done thoroughly. He never complains and does a really good job for me. He?s been involved in some of the most sensitive investigations that we?ve had in this department. I?m really glad to have him aboard and I know he?ll do well.”Giorgetti first joined the force in 1994 as a patrolman and, in 1999, he helped start the drug unit as a detective along with Leonard Campanello, who stepped down as assistant chief last month to become chief in Gloucester. After six years there, Giorgetti was promoted to sergeant, then to sergeant detective and, in 2009, he became a lieutenant and took over supervision of the Bureau of Investigations and the drug unit.?The Bureau of Investigations covers all general investigations from homicides down to property crimes,” said Giorgetti. “It?s the detective?s division but it?s referred to as the Bureau of Investigations.”State Rep. Donald Wong, R-Saugus, also attended, as did Town Manager Scott Crabtree, who congratulated Giorgetti and spoke about the work he?s done with him both on and off the force.?I?ve had the pleasure of coming onto the department at the same time together and, as you?re all aware, he?s well-respected within the department,” said Crabtree. “I?ve also had the honor of working with him when I was on the Board of Selectmen to deal with a lot of the liquor issues. He did an outstanding job of dealing with the sensitive matters with that and putting reports together ? He?s a company man and gets the job done.”Matt Tempesta can be reached at [email protected].
