Steve Krause

November 5, 2012 by Steve Krause

There will be a new Division 1 girls state soccer champion in 2012.The Peabody girls couldn’t find the net Sunday against Acton-Boxborough, and the Colonials pulled out a 1-0 victory in the second overtime against the defending champion Tanners in a D1 first-round game. The loss made it a double-dip for the Tanners against A-B over the weekend, as the boys team lost, 3-0, Saturday. In the first OT, Victoria Digiacomo appeared to have scored the game-winner on the rebound of a penalty kick, but the referees ruled the ball had not crossed the goal line.”It was clearly over the line,” said Peabody coach Dennis Desroches. “I’m still shocked it wasn’t called a goal. But sometimes that happens. You have some calls go against you ? and some non-calls too.”The Colonials won it on a goal with five minutes left in the second OT.”It came down to a bad bounce,” Desroches said. “And I knew that it could come down to something like that.”Fenwick 6, Latin Academy 0At Latin Saturday, in a Division 2 first-round game, Annette Ruggiero led the way for Fenwick with three goals. Vicki Caruso, Carolyn Claveau and Danielle DelTorto had one each, with assists coming from Ali MacDonald, DelTorto, and Lynn’s Jackie Edgett.Fenwick’s quarterfinal game is Tuesday (2) at Newburyport. In other girls action over the weekend, it was Beverly 4-3 over Cambridge in Division 1; Hamilton-Wenham 2, Gloucester 1 on penalty kicks; Wayland 2, Danvers 1 in overtime; and Wilmington 1, Marblehead 0 in Division 2; and Winthrop 5, New Mission 0 in Division 3.BOYS SOCCERDanvers 5, Tech 1At Danvers, Eric Martin scored three goals and an assist to lead the Falcons over the Tigers in a Division 2 North first-rounder.Other Danvers goals were from Drew Piazza and Nickoly Sahkin, who also had an assist.Other assists came from Caio Silva (2) and Brian Trefrey.Emerson Imul scored for Tech, but Danvers coach Mike Chase said the key to the game was his team’s marking of both Imul and Francisco Franco.Chase credited Nick Label and Brandon Hyde with marking Imul and Franco.”We had a good season,” said Tech coach Fred Gallo. “I’m proud of the way the kids played through the year ? the improvements I saw. I’m very pleased with them.Danvers is at home Tuesday against Concord-Carlisle.Lynnfield 3, Matignon 0At Matignon, captain James Hook scored twice and Connor Sullivan once in a Division 3 North first-rounder.”We scored all our goals in the first half, and things kind of evened out after that,” said coach Brent Munroe. The Pioneers are at Newburyport Tuesday.St. John’s 2, Framingham 1At St. John’s Saturday, Nate Schmidt scored the game-winner late in the second half to lift the Eagles in a Division 1 North first-rounder.Lev Kazalyan got St. John’s first goal.
