BYFIELD – The Saugus High football team decided to ruin Triton’s senior night at home, as the Sachems ran past the Vikings 35-27 Friday night.The Sachems dominated the first half on the ground with carries for 253 total yards. Doing the bulk of the duty in the first half was the duo of quarterback C.J Randolph (70 yards) and running back Nick Benoit (130 yards).Saugus was unstoppable on the ground in the first half, as the Sachems hit paydirt on their first four drives of the game.Saugus built a 28-7 lead at the half and never trailed. Randolph accounted for all four touchdowns in the first half (3 rushing, 1 passing). The Sachems did not make anything easy for themselves, as they were penalized 11 times in the game. The Vikings stymied the Sachems in the second half, as they outscored the Sachems 20-7 in the second half.Saugus only rushed for 85 yards in the second half. Triton found itself down 35-27 with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The Vikings kicked off deep and tried to force Saugus into a three and out. Randolph converted two first downs to ice the game for the Sachems.Triton had a valiant comeback effort with quarterback Brad Whitman leading the charge, but the Sachems built to big of a lead early to overcome. Saugus opened the game with an impressive 69-yard touchdown drive capped off by a Randolph two yard run to give Saugus a 7-0 lead.Triton answered right back with a 60-yard drive of its own that was capped off by a 20-yard run by Whitman. The Sachems then would have a 70-yard drive capped off by another Randolph two yard run to give Saugus a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Sachems attempted an onside kick, and recovered the ball.Saugus marched 50 yards for a touchdown, capped off by a 22-yard pass from Randolph to Ryan Henehan, to give Saugus a 21-7 lead. Benoit ended up with 172 yards rushing for Saugus.Randolph ended up with 118 yards rushing for the Sachems. The duo of Randolph and Benoit combined for just under 290 yards on the ground. Saugus has now evened its record to 5-5.
