St. John’s Prep suffered its first shutout loss of the season Sunday afternoon as the No. 4 Eagles (17-2-2) fell, 1-0, to unbeaten No. 2 Somerville (20-0-2) in the Div. 1 North Sectional title game at Manning Field. Felix DeBona’s 25th goal of the season early in the second half made the difference for the Greater Boston League champs.DeBona settled the ball in the scoring area, spun and found the upper half from 12 yards out. Otherwise Prep keeper Ben Alpern (six saves) excelled and made a sprawling leg save to deny DeBona on a breakaway. Coach Dave Crowell praised Matt Brady for his work in shadowing the Highlanders’ state scoring leader, Thayrone Miranda (48 points), and credited Carter Ocko with a strong performance as well.Somerville keeper Luis Guerra was especially sharp in the first half in recording the shutout.”I thought we played very well in the first half and had a couple of very good chances with the wind that we didn’t put away and that was the difference. I think that once they took the lead, we got away from what we do well, which is possess the ball,” Crowell said.”Overall, we’re very, very happy with the season. It was quite a run we had to make (wins against Framingham, Masconomet and Acton-Boxboro) to get here,” he concluded.TOURNEY VOLLEYBALLLynnfield 3, Notre Dame (Tyngsboro) 0At Lawrence High, No. 3 Lynnfield captured the MIAA Division 3 North Sectional title Saturday night by whitewashing chief rival and seven-time finalist Notre Dame. The loss was the first of the year for top-seeded Notre Dame (22-1). NDA defeated Lynnfield in the 2009 final, then went on to win the State title. The Pioneers are hoping to follow a similar path this year. The Pioneers rallied to hold sway in a rugged first set, 25-21, then went on to dominate the final two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-14. A 12-0 run in Game Two fueled Lynnfield, which improved to 20-3 and will face Central champion Millbury in a Division 3 State semifinal on Tuesday at Tewksbury HS (7).As has been the case throughout the season, Lynnfield was driven by the stellar all-around performances of Caroline Shannon, Hannah Shaievitz – ranked third in Division 3 in blocks – and Abby Norwood. Eighteen of Lynnfield’s wins have been 3-0 shutouts, including each of its three tournament games to date.Pioneer 3, KIPP-Lynn 1At Foxborough Regional, No. 3 KIPP Academy-Lynn Collegiate (KALC) fell to No. 2 Pioneer Charter in its first-ever MCSAO tournament trip. Shai Bohannon, Helen Maldonado and Sherrece Doman all played well for the KALC team, which finished the season 7-5.FOOTBALLWinthrop 18, Newburyport 16At Newburyport, Winthrop (5-5, 2-2) dominated the second half, sandwiching scoring drives of 81 and 73 yards around a Newburyport kick return for a touchdown to hand the Clippers (6-4, 3-1) their first league loss Sunday night. Despite falling behind, 10-0, the Vikings controlled tempo throughout, leading to healthy edges in plays (56-34), rushing yards (200-104) and total offense (277-146).Junior Jordan Corbett-Frank knifed in from a yard out with 52 seconds to play for the game-winner. Senior Mike Ferrino’s interception at the Newburyport 36 with 1:06 left in the first half changed the complexion of the game, setting up sophomore quarterback Dylan Driscoll’s first of two one-yard scoring runs on the final play of the half, pulling the Vikings to within 10-6 at the break.Senior David Capone had a number of key receptions, including a 23-yard grab on third-and-13 at the Newburyport two early in the fourth quarter that preceded Driscoll’s second score, giving the Vikings a 12-10 lead. The Clippers’ Tyler Cusack took the ensuing kickoff to the house but the Vikings responded with the game-winning drive that took all but the final 50 seconds off the clock.Ruben Powell (9 carries, 68 yards), David Gallo (9-59) and Corbett-Frank (18-48) drove the Vikings’ relentless ground game. Driscoll completed 4-of-11 passes for 77 yards, playing through two first-half interceptions
