The young St. Mary’s boys hockey team found a way to break even against a veteran St. Peter Marian team, 1-1, at Connery Rink in Lynn Wednesday night.The Spartans have 15 new players on this year’s squad compared to last year’s team. St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee knows this will be a work in progress.”This year’s team is completely different than last year’s team. We have a lot of young players playing big-time minutes. They did a great job tonight to tie a very good St. Peter Marian team,” Lee said.After a scoreless first period, St. Peter Marian struck first at the seven-minute marker to take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans tied the game five minutes into the third period, when Jon Powers scored, assisted by Connor Parent. It was a 1-1 tie with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, and St. Peter Marian had a breakaway chance to win the game. Spartan goalie Connor Jennings shut that chance down to preserve the tie for St. Mary’s (0-0-1).Medford 5, Bishop Fenwick 3At Medford, the Crusaders scored all of their goals in the second period to take a 3-2 lead, but the Mustangs went to town in the third period with three goals for the win. Drew Thibodeau, Brian Bassett and Mike Napolitano scored for Fenwick. Crusader goalie Pat O’Leary had 30 saves.GIRLS HOCKEYWinthrop/Lynn 4, Medford 4At Loconte Rink, the Lady Bulldogs probably thought they had seen enough of Brittani Lanzilli in their encounters with St. Mary’s last year, but Lanzilli transferred back to her hometown high school in the offseason and now she’s working her magic for the Mustangs.Lanzilli scored two goals and assisted on two others and in the process, recorded her 200th career point. Her sister, Kayli Lanzilli, had an assist and a goal.The Lady Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Kara Donati. Medford’s Sam Lopilato tied it up, but Julianna Kennedy put the combine team up on a goal midway through the first period. Brittani Lanzilli tied it at 2-2 before the buzzer sounded.Medford took a 3-2 lead on a Kayli Lanzilli goal early in the second, but the Lady Bulldogs bounced back on a goal by Ariana Dembro. When Brittani Lanzilli made it 4-3, the combine team had the answer again, this time on a goal by Lynn’s Gabby Kenniston.”I thought we played pretty well,” Lady Bulldogs coach Anthony Martucci said. “Medford’s a pretty good team. I thought our four defensemen really played well and I thought our first line matched up well.”Goalie Gretchen Howard had 18 saves. The Lady Bulldogs outshot Medford 37-22.Marblehead 9, Peabody 4At McVann-O’Keefe Rink, the Magicians scored four first period goals to take control of this one early on. Rachel McKay, who had two goals and four assists, got things going with Brittany Lydon adding one and Brittany Smith, two, before the end of the period. Courtney Cavanaugh found the net for the Tanners.Marblehead scored three more in the second period on goals by Halle McKay, Meg Gray and Rachel McKay. Peabody got one back thanks to a Courtney Smith tally, but the Tanners still found themselves in a 7-2 hole after two.The teams exchanged goals in the final period with Smith and Sophia Post scoring for Peabody and Lydon and Olivia Fusegni for Marblehead.Sabrina Doughman picked up the win in net. Jillian McCormick got the loss.
