Revere boys hockey falls to Somerville

December 13, 2012 by Brendan Tyman

REVERE – The result was not the one that first-year Revere Patriots (0-1) head coach Joe Ciccarello wanted to have in his debut. Revere allowed two third-period goals to fall to the Somerville Highlanders (1-0), 3-1, at Cronin Rink on Wednesday.Click here for a photo gallery.Somerville scored the game-winning goal 3:55 into the third period when Dan Camara picked up a loose puck and shot a wrister past Revere goalie John Papasadora. C.J. Albanese’s initial shot was blocked before Camara was able to get to the puck on the right side about five feet beyond the blue line.”We are starting a lot of young kids,” said Ciccarello. “We have three freshmen in the starting lineup and a bunch of sophomores and juniors who have never played a game in varsity before. Nothing beats game experience.”The game started with Somerville playing dump-and-chase in the Revere end. The Highlanders put several shots on net. With 12:48 left in the opening period, the Highlanders appeared to net a goal, but the official waved it off because the post came loose.”The referee made his decision,” said Somerville head coach Chuck Allen. “He said the post was moved before the puck went in the net.”Somerville was able to take the lead at the 5:10 mark of the first stanza when Albanese scored for the Highlanders.Despite Somerville controlling the puck for the majority of the period, Revere was able to get on the scoreboard in the final minute. Cam Whalen circled behind the net before he found Joe Guarino in front to beat Somerville goalie Sergey Markalov on the stick side. There was some chippy play in the second period with neither team being able to solve the opposing netminder. Overall, there were six penalties between both squads.”Our first period and third period were great,” said Allen. “There were a lot of head shots from both sides. I told our players if we play like that, then we will lose.”After Camara’s goal, Revere had some opportunities. The Somerville defenders were able to block some shots and passes in their end.One of the blocked passes led to the Highlanders scoring on a breakaway by forward Troy Martini.Papasadora had 32 saves for the Patriots.”He’s a senior. He’s our captain,” said Ciccarello. “He did what he was supposed to do.”Revere hopes its play will improve as the season progresses, but this loss was to a veteran team in the Highlanders.”Hopefully, one of these games we will get it right,” said Ciccarello.
