LYNN ? There were plenty of questions for the young Lynn English boys basketball team coming into the season. At least one of them was answered during the Bulldogs’ 88-58 win over an overmatched Revere team, Friday night, at Cavanagh Gym.View Photo GalleryThe Bulldogs can score. A lot.English put up a whopping 51 points in the first half and had 73 by the end of the third quarter. Fred Hogan led the way with 26 (21 in the first half), while Ben Bowden (13), Anthony Silfa (12) and Stevie Collins (11) also scored in double-figures.”We were coming off a little bit of a disappointing game in the (Elmo Benedetto) Jamboree last Friday against St. John’s Prep, so we weren’t really sure what to expect,” English coach Mike Carr said. “But the kids responded and really put forth a good effort tonight. That’s the thing I’m the most ecstatic about, our effort.”There wasn’t a lot to be ecstatic about for an overmatched Revere team. Backup point guard Tom Sor (11 points) came up with some slick moves to the basket in the third quarter, while Geo Gomez also scored 11 points and Michael Dreezen added 10.”It’s tough to come in here for the first game of the season and face Lynn English,” Revere coach Rick Hayes said. “But you’re not going to win a lot of games against anybody if you commit 32 turnovers like we did tonight, not even my son’s fifth grade travel team.”Eight seconds into the game, Fred Hogan hit a 3-pointer from the right elbow, and English was ahead for good. The first quarter lead got as big as 20-10 when Hogan sank another three with 1:40 left in the opening period, but Revere carved it back to seven (24-17) by the end of the quarter. The Bulldogs opened the second period with an 9-0 run that culminated with an easy layup by Hogan, and they got the lead to over 20 for the first time when Danny Lukanda made a pair of free throws with 2:26 left in the first half. A 3-pointer from the right elbow by Hogan made the score 51-28, at halftime.Bowden scored a couple of baskets in a 6-0 run to open the second half, but the Patriots got eight points from Dreezen in a 5-minute span to cut the lead back to 22 with 1:51 to go in the third quarter. Silfa scored seven points in a 10-0 run to close the period and make the score 73-41.A three by Schuyler Hogan peaked the lead at 77-43 with 6:18 left as the reserves from both teams played out the fourth quarter.
