The Classical High girls track team gave new coach Steve Martin his first win, defeating Salem, 43-39, at Lynn on Monday.It looked like Salem had this one under control heading into the next-to-the-last event, the two-mile. The Rams’ (1-1) top two-miler was out, leaving it up to teammates to get the job done. Danijela Banic rose to the occasion, nipping Salem’s Shannon Davis by 16:25.4 to 16:25.6. The five points, plus Casey Kurpiel’s point for third place, meant the meet would be decided in the relay.The Rams rolled out the iron (Anna Wargo, Carla Altema, Rebecca Potter and Jennifer Gaudet) and won the final event handily (4:36.9 to Salem’s 5:07.8).The Rams also had wins from Wargo in the 50 (6.6); Altema, 50-yard hurdles (8.1); and Jenn Ierardi in the 1,000 (4:14.9). Monica Meas and Madison Angelli’s second and third place finishes in the mile were also key in making sure the relay would decide the meet.Salem had wins from Deema Hijleh, high jump (4-2) and 300 meters (46.0); Abby Meadowcroft, shot put (27-3 1/4); Marlena Udden, 600 meters (1:59.7) and Kathy Le, mile (6:57.7).BOYS TRACKSalem 54, Classical 27At Lynn, the Rams had wins from Pway Dah, shot put (42-1 1/2) and Abdo Wargo, 600 meters (1:43.7). The Witches had wins from Ben Sattiewhite, high jump (6-0); Aaron Palmer, 50-yard hurdles (7.2); Cody Mercier, 50 yards (5.9); Jon Crimble, 300 meters (40.0); Mitchell Osgood, 1,000 (3:13.7); Anand Patel, mile (5:26.4) and William McCarthy, 2-mile (13:04.7). Classical won the relay.GIRLS BASKETBALLSt. Mary’s 58, Cardinal Spellman 28At Brockton, junior guard Brianna Rudolph scored 21 points to lift St. Mary’s.The Spartans (3-0, 2-0 Catholic Central League) set the tone early and never backed down. They led 19-8 after the first quarter and 29-15 at the half.”I think we established the pace of the game early. Any time you go on the road and win at Spellman in any sport, it’s a good thing,” St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall said.Newhall said Spellman played scrappy and played hard, but when his team had to put it together, it did.In addition to her 21 points, Rudolph had 12 rebounds. Freshman Gianna Moschella of Peabody had 10 points and 10 rebounds.”We came out in the third quarter and scored the first seven points. We started to wear them down a little bit,” Newhall said.BOYS BASKETBALLSaugus 59, Northeast 43At Saugus, the Sachems (2-0) led 44-17 at the half. Joe Bertrand (15 points) and Brandon Wladkowski (12 points) led the offense.
