Girls Basketball: Well-rounded Bishop Fenwick shuts down Medford

Matt Fraser

December 22, 2012 by Matt Fraser

So far this season, the Bishop Fenwick girls basketball team has used a strong and consistent team defense to win games. Friday night, the Crusaders’ balanced offense showed up as well, with three players scoring in double digits in a 48-32 win over visiting Medford.Kate Lipka led the way with 14 points for Fenwick while teammates Gianna Pizzano (11) and Chandler Wilder (10) also helped pace the offense. The Crusaders’ stingy defense shut down the visitors to start the second half, leaving the Crusaders with plenty of breathing room.Medford scored just four points in the third quarter, allowing the Crusaders to jump out to a 14-point lead.”We played great defensively again tonight, which is becoming a common occurrence for us,” said head coach Adam DeBaggis. “We came out playing strong defense to start the second half, which helped us break free on offense.”Fenwick improved to 4-1 with the victory and now begins preparation for the Masconomet Christmas Tournament. The Crusaders open up tournament play on Thursday at 5:30 against Wilmington.Peabody 52, Classical 23At Peabody, the Tanners (3-0) were all over the Rams (3-1) from the outset. Carolyn Scacchi (16 points) and Danielle Sullivan (12 points) both had big games for Peabody while Francesca Galeazzi led Classical with seven points. Jane Heil recorded her 499th win as Tanners head coach.Danvers 54, Saugus 19At Saugus, the host Sachems were overwhelmed by the Falcons, who cruised to victory. Norma Waggett was the lone bright spot for Saugus, scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds in the loss.Winthrop 58, Marblehead 33At Marblehead, the Vikings (3-0) got a game-high 14 points from Ashelyne Babb in a rout of the host Magicians (2-2). Niki Tsiotos added ten points for Winthrop. The hosts got eight-point performances from both Emily Freedland and Mia Bongiorno in the loss.
