The Bishop Fenwick boys and girls indoor track teams lost by a combined score of just 11 points on Wednesday against a tough Cardinal Spellman team. Despite the dual losses, Fenwick coach Jay Smith was pleased with the effort both teams put in.”They were both really close contests,” Smith said.In boys action, the Crusaders fell 46-40 despite a stellar day from Eric Razney, who won twice, in the dash (7.02) and long jump (19-3). Teammates Dan Deschenes and Bryan Mendes won the 600m (1:29) and mile (4:50) respectively. Despite Mendes’ mile win, Smith believes there is room for improvement.”We need to work on getting his time down, but I know he’ll get there,” explained Smith. “He’s one of the stronger kids in the league.”The Crusaders also got a win in the shot put from Patrick Corcoran with a distance of 41-2 1/2.The girls had just as impressive a day, receiving plenty of gutsy performances in a 41-36 setback. Fenwick’s Annette Ruggiero won the 300m with a time of 45.3 while teammate Hannah Smith won the 600m, running a 1:48. The Crusaders also got individual wins in the two-mile from Arianna Maida (12:14) and in the shot put from senior captain Maggie Lepley (27-9 1/2). Fenwick’s 4×4 relay team of Ruggiero, Smith, Caitlin Parrott, and Julia Pierce won with a time of 4:32.Both Fenwick squads fall to 2-1.BOYS TRACKSt. John’s 68, Brockton 27At the Lewis Center, the Eagles improved to 2-0. David Roy put on an impressive performance in the shot put, winning with a distance of 50-7 while teammate Colin Monahan won the 1000m with a time of 2:44. The Prep’s Will Raven was a double winner in the high hurdles (8:91) and high jump (5-6). Additionally, the Eagles got wins in the mile from Tom O’Shea (4:44) and in the two-mile from Nick Fecteau (10:24).Marian 43, St. Mary’s 41At Framingham, the Spartans fell just short, dropping to 1-2. St. Mary’s Justin O’Blenes qualified for states with a win in the 300m (38.8) while Josh Bertrand won the long jump with a distance of 15-6. Victor Molle won both the 55m (7.21) and high jump (5-6) while teammate Jake Cassidy had a solid day, finishing second in the 300 (39.29) and high jump (5) as well as being a member of the winning 4×4 relay team, along with O’Blenes, Bertrand, and Molle.GIRLS TRACKMarian 46, St. Mary’s 31At Framingham, the Spartans (1-2) fell despite a solid day from Toni Vinciarelli, who won the 300m (47.41) while finishing second in the 55m (8.14). Carol DiMaiti won the 55 with a time of 7.81 while teammate Tia Foglietta ran to victory in the two-mile with a time of 13:32.BOYS HOCKEYBeverly 6, Triton 3At the Cape Ann Savings Bank Tournament in Gloucester, the Panthers (4-0) advanced to the championship game (Thursday, 8), where they will play Marblehead, who defeated Gloucester later in the evening, 5-2. Andrew Irving scored twice for Beverly while brother Connor, last year’s NEC MVP, added a goal of his own in the win.Marblehead 5, G’ster 2At Gloucester, in the Gloucester Christmas Tournament, Marblehead was led by Tripp Franzese (2 goals), while Harrison Young made 18 saves for the Headers (3-1), who play Beverly tonight in the championship (8).BOYS BASKETBALLLynnfield 57, Saugus 43At the Pope John Christmas Tournament in Everett, a sluggish second half did the Sachems (3-2) in as the Pioneers took over. Lynnfield (4-0) got a game-high 16-point performance from Pat Kearny as well as double-digit efforts from Connor Sullivan (15) and Adam Buchanan (13). Saugus’ Brandon Wladkowski scored 14 in the loss. Lynnfield will face Revere in the final on Friday (7) while Saugus plays Pope John in the consolation game (3).GIRLS BASKETBALLLynnfield 55, Saugus 33At the Pope John Christmas Tournament in Everett, the Pioneers (2-2) got a game-high 17 points from Rachel Goodwin in the win over the Sachems. Lynnfield also got 8 points apiece from the trio of Shannon LaMusta, Katherine Lawless, and Emma Mancini. The Pioneers will play Revere in the championship game Friday at 5 p.m.
