Roundup: Swampscott girls hoop squeaks past Danvers

The Swampscott girls’ basketball team found itself in a dogfight against Danvers Friday night, the Big Blue was able to outlast the Falcons 32-30 in the Golden Tornado Tournament in Malden.The Big Blue raced to a 20-12 leas at the half. The Falcons tied the game 30-30 early in the fourth quarter. The game seemed to be tied forever, but the Big Blue broke the tie with six seconds left, when they hit two free throws to seal the game. Leading the way for Swampscott was tournament MVP Ara Talkov (17 points, 3 assists, 3 blocks). Alexa Goldman was named to the all tournament team for Swampscott. Swampscott coach Abram Roberts was ecstatic about his team early on.”I am so proud of my girls. They are getting better every day, and it was good to see their hard work pay off. I am very excited for my young team this season,” Roberts said.The Big Blue is now 3-1.Pope John Tournament FinalRevere 53, Lynnfield 42At Pope John, the Patriots stormed out to a 28-17 lead at the half. Lynnfield gave Revere a run for its money in the second half, but the Patriots were able to hold off the feisty Pioneers. Leading the way for Revere was tournament MVP Gena Restiano (16 points). Caitlin Caramello had a monster game on the boards for the Patriots (12 points, 14 rebounds, 9 offensive rebounds). Caramello and Amy Rotger were named to the Pope John all tournament team. Revere coach Katelyn Leonard was happy with her team’s performance.”We played a very solid game today. It was good to see the girls win this little tournament during the holidays,” Leonard said.Revere is now 4-2.BOYS HOCKEYSwampscott 9, E. Boston 2At East Boston in the finals of the Deep Freeze Tournament, Swampscott had no problem sharing the wealth, as six different players scored a goal. Ryan Cresta recorded a hat trick to lead the Big Blue. Trevor Massey had no problems sharing the wealth for Swampscott (4 assists). Robert Serino, Corey Carmody, Nunzio Moretti and Noah Maercklein all had one goal each for Swampscott. Swampscott is now 4-1.Christie Serino Christmas ClassicHingham 4, St. Mary’s 0At Malden, St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee was pleased with his team’s effort.”It was a hard fought game that we unfortunately fell on the wrong end of. Hingham is one of the best teams in the state, so for us to hang with them, is nice to see. I am proud of my boys effort today,” Lee said.Leading the way for the Spartans was Ryan Madden, who made the all tournament team. Connor Jennings had a strong game in net for St. Mary’s (27 saves). St. Mary’s is now 1-2-2.
