Senior captain Kara Donati scored two goals and assisted on a third, and eighth-grade goalie Gretchen Howard turned back 21 shots as the Winthrop/Lynn girls hockey team continued its unbeaten (4-0-1) start to the season Saturday night with a 5-2 non-league decision over Watertown at Larsen Rink.Donati scored the eventual game-winning goal with 3:28 remaining in the second period, then staked her club to a 4-2 lead with her second tally at 2:26 of the third period. She also set up Caroline McKinnon for the only goal of the first period.”Kara has been a great leader for us and she is really getting it going for us offensively,” said coach Anthony Martucci, whose club amassed a whopping 60-23 edge in shots. Ariana Dembro broke a 1-all tie and put Winthrop/Lynn ahead for good at 9:42 of the second period while Annie Mahoney completed the scoring with 20 seconds to play.Martucci praised Howard for her composure during a 5-on-3 Watertown power play, during which she made five sterling stops. Emily Loprete had both Watertown goals.”Loprete is a very talented player and tough to contain. However, I thought our defense of Cat Salvetti, Julianna Kennedy, Kasey Harris, Gabby Kennedy and Courtney White did a great job,” Martucci said.BOYS HOCKEYMarblehead 3, Bp. Ian Maag, set up by Ty Bates and Zac Cuzner, scored the game-winning goal in the opening minute of the second period.Marblehead coach Bob Jackson praised the development of Koopman, who is on a line with Tripp Franzese and Aaron DeAngelo.”Matt has a lot of positive skills. He is getting adjusted to the size and speed of the game at the high school level. (He) sees the ice extremely well and makes very good decisions. We have given him a lot of responsibility and he has been able to handle most of it. (His) upside is very high and his thirst to learn is at the same intensity. His twin brother Kyle, a defenseman, is very good as well and they push each other,” said Jackson.WRESTLINGLynnfield/No. Reading pins three moreAt North Reading, the undefeated Pioneers extended their record to 11-0 by sweeping Wakefield (45-25), Westford Academy (47-28) and Watertown (50-16).
