Swimming: English gets past Swampscott

The English swimming team put on a show at the JCC in Swampscott, as the Bulldogs defeated the Big Blue 117-69 Thursday night.English coach Lisa Trahant was ecstatic about her team.”My team swam excellent tonight. It was really fun to watch and to coach,” Trahant said.The dynamic Bruno brothers led the Bulldogs (2-2). Mike Bruno took the 200 free (2:11.57) and the 500 free (5:42.57). Matt Bruno took the 50 free (26.57) and the 100 free (1:01.49). They were both also on the winning 200-medley relay with Jesse Freeman and Marina Broufas (2:11.82). The rest of the English individual winners were: Francis Serwicki, 200 IM (2:36.53); Matt Demirs, diving (184.57); Freeman, 100 backstroke (1:13.11) and Broufas, 100 breaststroke (1:26.51). The Bulldogs also took first in the 200 free relay (Broufas, Demirs, Brandie Holland, Matt Bruno, 1:57.82), and the 400 free relay (Serwicki, Freeman, Demirs, Mike Bruno, 4:28.43). Swampscott’s Erin Cassidy and Caitlin Rogers had strong performances for the Big Blue (1-3).Beverly 101, Classical 74At Beverly, the Rams excelled in diving, as they swept that event. Leading the way in diving was Bob Choquette. Brian Nelson took the 100 breaststroke (1:13.22) for Classical (3-1). The Panthers were led by Nick Groblewski and Emily Walsh, who were both double winners. Groblewski took the 200 free (2:18) and 100 backstroke (1:11.91), and Walsh took the 200 medley (2:26.72) and 500 free (6:03.62). Beverly is now 2-0-1.Marblehead 99, Revere 66At Revere, the Magicians put on a magical performance in the 200 medley relay (Harrison Ruth, Charlie Seltzer, Michael Kaminsky, Chris Rodts, 1:52.3), which qualified for the sectional cut. Marblehead’s Ruth also took the 50 free (24.06), Tyler Phillips won diving and Seltzer took the 100 breaststroke (1:05.8). Leading the way for Revere was Ryan Tran, who took first in the 100 backstroke (1:05.73) and second in the 200 free (2:19.96).Danvers 51, Salem 50At the Danvers YMCA, it doesn’t get much closer than this. The meet came down to the final relay with the Falcons (3-0) needing second to pull out the win and that’s what they did. Tom Giannino and Chris Demirdogen’s one-two finish in the 50 free and Trevor Chasse and Zach Tarricone’s one-two finish in diving were key in the win. The Falcons also had a strong performance from Catherine Trott, who took second in the 200 in her first attempt at the event.Lynnfield 92, Ham-Wen 88At the Peabody YMCA, winners for the Pioneers (3-0) included: Susan Yee, 200 IM (2:29.27); Matt DeVito, 50 free (24.85); Bailey Fanikos, diving; 200 free relay (Mike Welter, Joe Maglio, Mike Lanzillotti, DeVito, 1:45.78).
