The St. Mary’s girls basketball team outscored Bishop Fenwick 20-4 in the first quarter and never looked back on Monday evening. By halftime, the lead had increased to 20 and the Spartans were able to cruise to the victory, leaving them at a perfect 8-0 on the season.
“We came out strong and got some solid production from a few players,” explained Spartans coach Jeff Newhall. “Fenwick is a good team so we were happy to come out and play the way we did.”
Brianna Rudolph posted a double-double for the Spartans with 16 points and 11 rebounds while teammate Sharell Sanders had a well-rounded nine point, seven assist, and six steal performance.
St. Mary’s Jennie Mucciarone was equally impressive with 11 points, six assists, and four steals while Fenwick (6-3) got a team-high 12 points from Rose Fantozzi in the loss.
Revere 54, Peabody 43
At Revere, the Patriots’ Caitlin Caramello recorded a double-double (13 points, 12 rebounds) to lead her team to victory. Revere’s Gina Restiano scored 20 points to lead the victors while Peabody’s Carolyn Scacchi scored 15 points to pace the Tanners.
Marblehead 39, Swampscott 35
At Swampscott, the Magicians (4-3) pulled this one out of the fire in double overtime. The game was tied 27-27 at the end of regulation and again at the end of the first overtime. Marblehead’s McKenna Barrett had a couple of key shots in the second overtime and Madison Shea helped by nailing two free throws with less than a minute left to secure the win.
Caroline Helms didn’t have a point for Marblehead, but coach Skip Likins said she was the hero. Her job was to keep Swampscott’s Ara Talkov from inflicting too much damage and she did. Although Talkov had 21 points, 14 came from the free-throw line. As a team Swampscott was 16-for-20 from the line.
Barrett had 17 points for Marblehead, including five of six from the line. Emily Freedland had six points, including a bucket to tie the game with six seconds left at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Winthrop 54, Saugus 32
At Winthrop, the Vikings head into their games against the larger schools of the Northeastern Conference North with a stellar 7-0 overall record, 5-0 in the NEC Small.
Winthrop seized control of this one early, taking a 28-9 lead into the locker room at the half. Kristen Siscamanis led the way for Winthrop with 10 points. Theresa Jones had eight. Norma Waggett had 15 points for the Sachems.
“Tonight I thought we executed well. We pressed and were able to force turnovers that we converted,” Winthrop coach Ignacio Oyola said.
Danvers 40, Gloucester 33
At Danvers, Emily McNulty and Kasey Sherry each had 13 points for the Falcons (4-3, 3-2 Northeastern Conference). Gloucester led by a point at the half, but Danvers turned up the heat on defense, holding the Fishermen to two points in the third quarter and eight in the fourth.
Although happy with the win, coach Pat Veilleux was disappointed by the lack of offense.
“I guess we had enough in the tank in the third quarter to hold them down. A win is a win,” Veilleux said.
