The Lynnfield boys basketball team found itself down for virtually the entire night. The Pioneers needed a late rally to put the game into overtime, where Lynnfield wore down Triton to the tune of 74-71 at Lynnfield Wednesday night.
Lynnfield coach Scott McKenzie was not surprised how intense the game was.
“I always expect a tight grind against Triton. My team played very well tonight and I am proud how they never gave up. I was just surprised how high scoring the game was,” McKenzie said.
Lynnfield found itself down 64-53 with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Pioneers would go on an 11-0 run to close out regulation, which pushed the game into overtime. Lynnfield held a 72-71 lead with 15 seconds left, when Pioneer Patrick Kearney hit two clutch free throws to push the lead to three (74-71). Triton missed its three-point attempt, sealing the win for Lynnfield. Kearney (19 points, 12 assists, 7 rebounds) and Connor Sullivan (27 points) came up big for Lynnfield (7-2).
Beverly 66, Swampscott 65 (OT)
At Swampscott, the Big Blue held a 58-56 lead with 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Beverly had possession; Josh Cairns ran off a screen and hit an elbow jumper to tie the game 58-58 with 13 seconds remaining. The game would go into overtime, where Swampscott held a 65-64 lead with 10 seconds left. Beverly’s Cam Rogers hit a fadeaway jumper at the top of the key with no time remaining. Rogers had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Panthers (6-2). Swampscott’s Chad Nelson had a big game, as he recorded a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds).
Classical 59, Marblehead 38
At Marblehead, the Rams dominated the first half, to the tune of 37-14. Leading the way for Classical was the duo of Eraldo Custodio (12 points) and George Perez (11 points). Classical improved its record to 6-5.
Danvers 90, English 70
At Danvers, the Falcons (7-0) had no problem sharing the wealth. Leading the way for Danvers were: Eric Martin (13 points, 9 assists); Danny Connors (20 points, 10 rebounds); Nick Bates (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Nick McKenna (23 points). Danvers coach John Walsh feels the future is bright for English.
“Those kids over on the other side are very talented. That team is going to be loaded not only at the end of this year, but for years to come,” Walsh said.
English’s Fred Hogan and Eric Rosario led the way for the Bulldogs.
Peabody 58, Winthrop 53
At Winthrop, the Tanners held a one-point lead with just one minute remaining in the contest. Matt Correale hit a big three-pointer to give the Tanners some breathing room late. Leading the way for Peabody was Ben Martinez (11 points, 9 rebounds). Peabody is now 3-5.
Revere 69, Gloucester 52
At Gloucester, the Patriots (5-4) sprinted to a 27-16 lead at the half, and never looked back. Leading the way for the Patriots was Mike Ciambelli (16 points). Gio Gomez had another solid performance for Revere (10 points). For Gloucester, junior forward Drew Shairs recorded a double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds). Gloucester is now 3-6.
