The English High girls basketball team struggled a bit offensively, but the defense picked up the slack in a 36-32 win over Danvers Wednesday at Lynn.
Makayla Everette has been a force all season and she stepped up again against the Falcons, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Diondra Woumn had seven points with Shannon Calnan and Deidra Newson each adding six. Kasey Sherry had the hot hand for Danvers with 15 points.
“It was a rough game (offensively),” English coach Fred Hogan said. “We couldn’t get our offense going, but the defense is still holding teams down. We only allowed 32 points. That’s where we want to be.”
Peabody 46, Winthrop 37
At Peabody, the Tanners (5-2) got back on track with a strong performance against a previously undefeated Winthrop team. Courtney Bua had 14 points and went 6-for-6 from the line. Sara Hosman, a freshman, had 12 points and hit four of five from the line and Carolyn Scacchi had five points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and six blocks. The Vikings were led by Ashlyne Babb, who had 15 points.
“We needed to fix some things that we had been doing wrong,” Peabody coach Jane Heil said. “They (Winthrop) are a great team. They’re aggressive, they have speed”¦”
Marblehead 44, Classical 37
At Classical, the Magicians won this one at the line, hitting 20 of 27 free throws compared to the Rams’ 8-for-23.
“We fouled too much and didn’t convert on the line,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said.
Monta Connolly had 10 points and Bobbie Dee Regan checked in with nine. Emily Freedland led the way for Marblehead with 14 and McKenna Barrett contributed 12.
Lynnfield 51, Triton 23
At Byfield, the Pioneers (5-4) hit the ground running, taking a 42-17 lead after three quarters. Emma Mancini was the big gun for Lynnfield with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Beverly 59, Swampscott 51
At Beverly, Ara Talkov had 18 points for the Big Blue, Jacquie Walsh, 11 points and Bridget Lawless, nine points, in the loss. Swampscott is 5-3.
Revere 44, Gloucester 35
At Revere, Caitlin Caramello had 14 points and a whopping 23 rebounds for the Patriots, who also had a big game from Gena Restiano (15 points).
Bishop Fenwick 39, Medford 33
At Medford, Rose Fantozzi topped the ticket with 12 points (including a big free throw down the stretch) for the Crusaders, who improve to 7-3 with the win. Kate Lipka had nine points and Chandler Wilder, eight.
