The Classical High girls basketball team ended a not-so-great week on a high note Friday with a 59-37 win over Gloucester at Classical.
The Rams lost to English on Monday and Marblehead on Wednesday, but the win over the Fishermen salvaged the week. Center Kristin Lauria, in her second game back after being sidelined with a knee injury, came up big with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
The Rams (7-4) also got a huge lift from freshman Chenysse Hill, who had nine points including a shot from mid-court to end the third quarter that put the Rams up by one points. She went on to score five points in the fourth quarter to help nail down the win.
“That (the half-court shot) was a big momentum play,” coach Tom Sawyer said. “We were able to carry it over into the fourth quarter where we outscored them 25-5. We needed a win. We had lost two home games.”
Monta Connolly also had a big night for the Rams with 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
English 61, Winthrop 33
At English, the Bulldogs (8-2) held a commanding 30-13 lead at the half and never looked back. English coach Fred Hogan was very impressed by his team’s performance.
“We knew this was a really big game in the NEC. Winthrop came in at 7-1, but I knew my girl’s were ready. They moved the ball so well on offense, it was great to see,” Hogan said.
English combined for 18 assists total in the game. Diondra Woumn (17 points, 6 assists). And Catherine Stinson (15 points, 6 assists) led the way for the Bulldogs. Mikayla Everette had a strong game on the glass for the Bulldogs (5 points, 14 rebounds).
Peabody 77, Saugus 38
At Peabody, the Tanners (6-2, 5-2 NEC) had a monster night offensively, scoring 44 second half points, but it was Alex Lomasney, who didn’t score a point, that got coach Jane Heil’s thumbs up. Lomasney held Saugus sharpshooter Norma Waggert to only four points in the first three quarters. Waggert finished with 10.
Carolyn Scacchi (24 points, 15 rebounds, 6 blocks) and Amanda Matthews, 20 points, led the offensive assault.
Fenwick 62, Matignon 32
At Peabody, the Crusaders came out a little flat in the first quarter, but went on a tear the second quarter, outscoring Matignon 27-7 to take a 43-9 lead into the locker room. Chandler Wilder led the way with 14 points. Sydney Brennan and Rose Fantozzi had 11 points each and Kate Lipka, nine points. Fenwick is 8-3.
Danvers 47, Salem 38
At Salem, the Falcons (5-4, 4-3 NEC) strung together four strong periods of basketball and it paid off. Danvers led by seven at the half.
“We’re used to playing from behind most of the time,” Danvers coach Pat Veilleux said. “We had a bit third quarter.”
Freshman Devin Walsh had 10 points, including a couple of threes. Emily McNulty led the way with 12 points , Kasey Sherry was good for nine points and Delaney Zecha had six points, six assists and six steals. Rachel Zipper had 11 points for Salem, four of the with 11 points, four of her hoops in fourth quarter to cut into Danvers’ 14-point lead.
