The English High girls basketball team ran its winning streak to six with a 58-30 victory over Gloucester Tuesday at Gloucester.
The Bulldogs (9-2, 7-1 Northeastern Conference) pounded the Fishermen in the early going to take a 37-16 lead at the half. Catherine Stinson had 17 points and nine assists; Deidra Newson, 16 points and 10 rebounds and Mikayla Everette, five points and nine rebounds. Diondra Woumn checked in with nine points.
“It continues to be our defense,” English coach Fred Hogan said. “Defensively we’re playing really unbelievable.”
Danvers 51, Classical 48
At Classical, the Falcons’ Kasey Sherry (16 points) and freshman Hannah Llewellyn (11 points) combined to put the Rams into a hole they couldn’t escape.
“It was a hard-fought game. The kids played hard. There was just a little too much Kasey Sherry,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said.
Monta Connolly had 13 points for the Rams as did freshman Chenysse Hill, who came off the bench to get things going. Franki Galeazzi had 12 points.
The Falcons are 5-3 in the Northeastern Conference and 6-4 overall. Classical is 7-5.
Shawsheen 60, Tech 29
At Tech, Hattie Watkins had 17 points and Tori Park had 10 for the Tigers, who are 3-7. Marianny Jimenez, although only 5-1, had 10 rebounds. Eight of Park’s 10 points came in the fourth quarter.
Marblehead 50, Salem 47 (OT)
At Marblehead, the Magicians’ Emily Freedland hit a free throw with just under six seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. She supplied the heroics again in OT by burying a three, stealing the ball, getting fouled and hitting the free throw to open up a little breathing room. Freedland had 15 points, Mia Bongiorno, 15 points and McKenna Barrett, 17 points to go with 16 rebounds. Marblehead is 6-4.
Beverly 53, Saugus 43
At Saugus, the Sachems had a big game from Norma Waggett, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Gianna Zirpolo also came up big with 12 points. MaryCate Flaherty had 12 points for Beverly.
Peabody 42, Swampscott 40
At Swampscott, this one was a barnburner from start to finish with neither team taking more than a five-point lead. The difference came at the free-throw line with Peabody hitting 10 of 12. Alex Lomasney, who finished with seven points, went 5-for-5 from the line with the biggest two freebies being Peabody’s final two points of the game with 11 seconds remaining.
Carolyn Scacchi had 17 points and 18 rebounds. Ara Talkov was top dog for the Big Blue with 17 points.
Arlington Catholic 58, Bishop Fenwick 39
At Peabody, the Crusaders trailed by 12 at the half and despite a better second half, couldn’t catch AC. Kate Lipka had 14 points, Chandler Wilder, 12 points and freshmen Colleen Corcoran and Sydney Brennan, four points each.
Winthrop 33, Revere 31
At Winthrop, Temisan Meggison had 10 points for the Vikings, who improve to 8-2. Caitlin Caramello had 13 points in a losing effort for the Patriots. Revere led at the half in a game that was close from start to finish.
