Hockey: Swampscott maintains brisk pace

January 17, 2013 by daily_staff

The Swampscott boys hockey team is off to its best start in years, and the Big Blue kept up the pace Wednesday with a 3-0 shutout over East Longmeadow at Salem State.

Noah Maercklein scored twice as the Big Blue moved their record to 9-1.

Chris Carmen assisted on both Maercklein’s goals, and Patrick Burkett had an assist on the first one, at 5:09 of the second period.

Joe Silva, from Trevor Massey and Devon Wall, made it 2-0 at 14:01 of the middle period.

Maercklein put the game away with a goal at 3:33 of the third.

Trent Gallagher had 23 saves for Swampscott.

“We’re off to a good start,” said coach Gino Faia. “Tonight, we beat a good team from the western part of the state. We didn’t know what to expect, and a lot of guys just chipped in and helped out.”

Swampscott is the home team at Salem State Saturday against Beverly.

Somerville 2, Revere 1

At Somerville, despite the defeat, coach Joe Ciccarello was happy with the way the 0-8-1 Patriots played.

“We’re finally getting it,” he said. “They played the game we needed them to play. But we’re a young team, and we have trouble scoring. But it was no doubt our best game of the year.”

Steve Noel scored Revere’s only goal off a blocked shot by goalie Adam Comeau, and went in alone on a breakaway.

Comeau was spectacular in net, Ciccarello said.

“He made many spectacular saves,” he said.

Williams 4, St. Mary’s 1

At Braintree, the Spartans nearly upset Williams. Jordan Manthorne cut the deficit in half in the third period. Two breakaway goals by Williams put the game away.

“We had one of our best games of the year,” said St. Mary’s head coach Mark Lee.

St. Mary’s thought it tied the game with 2:30 left, but Williams’ goalie snagged the puck.

Mike Jesmond tallied the winner at 9:20 of the second period for Williams.

St. John’s 5, Xaverian 0

At Xaverian, Brian Pinho had two goals and three assists as the Eagles moved to 8-2.

Nic Gianelli, Jack McCarthy and Andrew Brandano also scored for The Prep. Goalie Billy Price had 16 saves.

Pinho’s goal with three seconds left in the second period was the backbreaker, coach Kris Hanson said.

The Eagles play Austin Prep Saturday night.

Winthrop 3, Lynnfield 0

At Peabody, the Vikings got goals from Chris Page (1 goal, 1 assist), Pierce Lamberton (1 goal) and Mark Ferullo (1 goal). Ray Feeley had a shutout for Winthrop (3-2-4).

GIRLS HOCKEY

Masco 3, Winthrop 0

At Gloucester, the Lady Bulldogs outshot the Chieftains 56-24, but turnovers spelled the difference, coach Anthony Martucci said.

“We’re struggling,” he said. “Turnovers are a problem, and we’re not getting the timely scoring we need.”

The Dogs, 5-3-1, play Medford Saturday.

Beverly 9, Medford 2

At Medford, the Panthers got three goals and an assist from Nicole Woods to move to 9-0 under first-year coach Brian Seabury.

Libby Konaxis (2 goals, 2 assists) and Kristin McCarthy (2 goals) also played well. The Panthers got singletons from Nicole Karens (also two assists) and Rachel Trocchi (assist as well).

Peabody 3, Everett 2

At McVann-O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, the Tanners (3-8-0) got the game-winning goal from Ciara DiSalvo with 1:14 left. Goalie Jillian McCormick had 23 saves.

“They knew if they made a mistake, it would cost them the game,” said Peabody coach Larry Minehan.

DiSalvo added an assist on the first goal by Waverly Cohen. Courtney Smith scored the second goal with the assist by McCormick.

Marblehead 7, Cambridge 5

At Cambridge, the Lady Magicians (5-4) came back by scoring all seven of their goals in the final two periods. Marblehead fell behind 3-0 after the opening frame. Brittany Lydon scored a hat trick. Brittany Smith (two goals) potted the winning goal and Rachel McKay added two goals apiece. Goaltender Sabrina Doughman had 16 saves for Marblehead.
