Roundup: Split decision for KIPP hoop teams

The KIPP Academy-Lynn Collegiate basketball squads split their games on Wednesday, with the girls defeating Boston Prep on the road and the boys losing to Boston Prep, also on the road.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

KIPP 48, Boston Prep 20

At Boston Prep in Hyde Park, Alex Huffman led the way for the Panthers (6-0 overall, 4-0 in the MCSAA) with 17 points.

Also starring for KIPP were Pleilerkay Gaye (10), Serena High (8, in her first game of the year after coming back from an injury), and Marie Kamba (7).

“We started slow,” said coach Nat Jones. “We moved the ball well, but missed a lot of easy shots. In the second half we picked it up and played well.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Boston Prep 83, KIPP 62

At Boston Prep in Hyde Park, KIPP was up 34-28 at the break, but Boston Prep scored 55 second-half points to win going away.

Top players for KIPP were Ricardy Mehu (17 points, 8 steals), Desi D’Oleo (13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals), Jose Valera (10 points, 6 rebounds), and Danya Smith (6 points, 5 rebounds, four assists and three steals).

WRESTLING

Beverly 30, Marblehead 12

At Beverly, the Magicians were short-handed due to the flu, fielding only seven wrestlers out of 14.

They got wins from Sean Taylor of Marblehead, a 285-pound heavyweight, who pinned his opponent; and from Swampscott’s Jake Powell, 126, who also scored a pin.

St. John’s 54, Cath. Mem. 10

At CM, St. John’s moves to 3-0 in the Catholic Conference and 25-2 overall.

Winners were: Lou Bornstein, 113; D.J. Lemieux, 126; Fred Colberg, 132; Jared Costa, 138; James Smith, 145; Peter Locke, 160; Solomon White, 170; Jim Messeder, 182; Jon Polansky, 195; Ian Butterbrodt, 220; Corey Jean-Jacques, 285.

SWIMMING

Northeast 60, Tech 42

At Northeast, the Tigers got some outstanding performances. Freshman Nick Westin won two events (200 free at 2:32.88 and 500 free in 7:20.21).

Other winners for Tech: Jaelaeim Alicea, 100 free (1:11.07); Henrique Santos, 200 IM (3:02.03); Dayan Gonzalez, diving (he also qualified for the sectional and state tournaments with 201.83 points); James Marten, Jonathan Lopez, Christian Guevera, and Gonzalez were the winners in the 200 medley relay (2:13.52).

Lynnfield 102, Masco 81

At the Peabody Y, winners for Lynnfield were: Matt DeVito, 50 free (24.78); Bailey Fanikos, diving; the 200 free relay team; and Alexandra Kartsounis, 100 backstroke. The Pioneers are 5-0.

BOYS TRACK

Danvers 50, Swampscott 36

At Swampscott, the Big Blue (3-2) got wins from Declan McClung in the 600 (130.6) and Matt Mahoney in the mile (4:45.9). Swampscott also won the 4 x 400 relay in 3:55.5.

For the Falcons, who remained undefeated at 5-0, the following scored victories: Connor Rollins, high jump (5-8); Joe Manson, shot put (53-6); Kyle Sullivan, 55 hurdles (8.4); John Thomas, 55 dash (6.4); Brandon Hyde, 300 (39.8); Drew Piazza, 1,000 (2:41.5); and Kevin Herbert, 2-mile (11:03.1).

Beverly 66, English 20

At Beverly, the Bulldogs (1-4) got wins from Alex Ortega in the 50-yard dash (5.7); Pegter Matu, 600 (1:32.4) and Tyler Comer, 2-mile (11:33.4).

Beverly’s winners were Jay Richardson, high jump (5-9); Harry Brown, shot put (45-111/2); Anthony Harris, 50 dash (7.9); Jordan Rawding, 300 (40.0); Alex Greco, 1,000 (2:42.1); Campbell Wood, mile (5:13.9).

The Panthers also took the relay in 4:16.3.

GIRLS TRACK

Swampscott 51, Danvers 35

At Swampscott, the Big Blue (3-1) had a good day in the running events. Emma Walsh took the 600 (1.49.2), with Aisling Dennehy winning the 300m (45.5), Alison Carr the 1,000 (3.29.8), Sarah Kelley the mile (5.42.5) and Hailey Irwin the 2-mile (12:47.3).

Also winning for Swampscott was Vy Le in the 55 hurdles

For Danvers, Ashley Brooks jumped 5-0 to win the high jump, Meghan Kellard took the shot put (34-3 3/4), and Xanthi Pantazelos the 55 dash (7.5). The Falcons, 2-2, also took the 4×440 relays in 4:37.2.

Beverly 73, English 12

At Beverly, a pair of Bulldogs (0-4) took firsts: Phallika Mon in the 50 (6.4) and Princess Guwor (46.3).

Kristen O’Connor was a double winner for the Panthers (4-0), taking the high jump (5-0) and 50 hurdles (7.4).

Other Beverly winners: Natalie Shea, shot put (39-51/4), Keely Higgins, 600 (1.56.2); Alli Sheehan, 1,000 (3.28.8); Maeve Monahan, mile (5.55); Samantha Linden, 2-mile (13.48.7). Beverly also won the 4×400 hurdles in 4.49.8.
