The St. Mary’s girls basketball team took on Sabis International Charter School, the iron of Western Mass, in the 2013 Spaulding Hoophall Classic Thursday and won, 54-36, at Springfield College.

The Spartans (10-1) jumped out to a 30-11 lead at the half against a team that won the Division 3 state title last year and is off to a 12-0 start this season.

“I thought we pressured them pretty well,” St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall said.

Newhall’s clan held Sabis to only 22 percent shooting and forced 29 turnovers. Sharell Sanders was named Hoophall Player of the Game with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals. Teammate Brianna Rudolph also came up big with 25 points and seven rebounds.

The Spartans also got a lift from the bench with Emily Morris pulling down seven rebounds and Jen Cook providing a spark with her five points. Jennie Mucciarone finished with 10 points despite having to sit with three fouls.

St. Mary’s (10-1) needs one more win to qualify for the state tournament. The Spartans will practice in Springfield today, visit the Hall of Fame and then head to Fitchburg for a game against St. Bernard’s.
