Taking control after halftime, the English boys basketball team surged past Winthrop, 93-70, at Winthrop on Sunday.
“We worked off our pressure and eventually wore Winthrop down,” English coach Mike Carr said.
The game was tied 39-39 at halftime before English pulled away.
Point guard Eric Rosario led English (7-4) with 27 points. Fellow guards Stevie Collins and Freddy Hogan added 19 and 17, respectively.
“We’re living off our three guards,” said Carr, who also praised forward Danny Lukanda for coming up big in the second half.
Josh Babb scored 33 points for Winthrop.
“He absolutely destroyed us,” Carr said.
St. John’s 67, Xaverian 42
At Memorial Gymnasium at St. John’s, Max Burt led all scorers with 15 points, but right behind were Drex Costello (14) and Ben Judson (13) to help the Eagles raise their record to 11-0.
The Prep jumped out to a 24-10 lead after a quarter, but Xaverian had whittled that edge down to 35-31 by the break.
But The Prep’s defense clamped down in the second half, holding the Hawks to only 11 points.
WRESTLING
Triton Tournament
Lynnfield swept Saturday’s tournament, and, in the process, captured its first Cape Ann League title since forming its cooperative with North Reading.
Eric Kerr at 113, C.J. Finn at 170, John Klug at 182 and Tom Arseneault at 220 swept their matches. However, it was Anthony Manganiello at 172 and Finn whose victories over Triton provided the margin of victory to ensure the league title.
The scores were Lynnfield 39, Triton 30; Lynnfield 24, Everett 9; and Lynnfield 54, Melrose 17.
Springfield Central Tournament
St. John’s Prep won three out of four matches in the quad meet, losing only to Mount Anthony, Vt., which is the No. 1 team in New England.
Other scores were St. John’s 42, Central 26; St. John’s 63, Agawam 6; and St. John’s 67, Bacon Academy (Conn.), 8
The Prep is now 28-3.
Hunter Costa (106), Jared Costa (138), Peter Locke (160) and Ian Butterbrodt (220) won all four of their matches while Louis Bornstein (who also recorded his 100th career dual meet win against Bacon) (113); D.J. Lemieux (126), Jim Messeder (182), Jon Polansky (195) and Corey Jean-Jacques (285) won three.
Ben DiNatale and Frank Soucy recorded their first varsity wins.
Weymouth Tournament
Senior co-captain Jake Powell was the standout in a match in which Marblehead only sent six wrestlers due to illness.
Powell scored the most pins of anyone in the tournament, and he saved a victory with a pin over his opponent from Plymouth South.
“It was one of the best matches he’s ever wrestled,” said coach Michael Stamison.
Sean Taylor (285) took third in the tournament, and defeated his opponent from Plymouth South in the finals.
And junior Ali Atallah went 2-2 at 182.
Pentucket Tournament
It was a tough day for Saugus, but four wrestlers stood out. Seventh grader Danny McCullough pinned his opponent at 107, sophomore Nick Vokey beat Wilmington at 220, Anthony Fernandez scored a pin at 126 over Wakefield, and heavyweight Ray Meggs pinned his opponent from Wilmington.
B&G TRACK
Division 2 Relay Festival
The Classical girls scored seventh in the long jump (41-3) with a team of Jen Gaudet, Rebecca Potter and Anna Wargo.
The 4 x 50 team of Gaudet, Potter, Wargo and Halana Glittens finished 17th (26.23), and the 4 x 200-meters team of Gaudet, Potter, Wargo and Monica Maes finished 17th (1:55:46).
For the boys, the 4 x 200 team of Shadrack Abgonsolo, Romario Louidhon, George Clark and Brad Scuzzarella finished 28th (1:40).
East Coast Invitationals
St. John’s finished 2-3 in the shot put with Evan Dombrowski throwing 52-1/2 and David Roy 50-5. Will Raven was seventh with a personal best 8.35 in the 55 high hurdles.
State Relays
The Marblehead girls finished 4th overall. Marblehead scored in six different events, its best finish during the tenure of head coach Mike Toomey.
Medalists were: 4×50, 6th place (Kaitlin McCarthy, Mimi Goetz, Monica Thorne, and Julia Lothrop); shot put, 4th place (Goetz, Lothrop, Kelly Roland); long jump, 3rd place (Goetz, Thorne, Olivia Vener); high jump, 3rd place (Roland, Lilly Cummings, Celina Variam); sprint medley, 3rd place (Paige Ferrucci, Alyssa Nye, Carlyn McGrath, Kathleen Huber); distance medley, 6th place (Ferrucci, Vener, Anna Barrell, Janaya Randall).
GYMNASTICS
Danvers 142.45, Lynnfield 141.6
At Danvers, the Falcons’ Roni Levine (36.3) took third in the all-around, second in the vault (9.35), tied for second in the beam (9.35) and third in the floor (9.1).
Other Falcons winners were Jackie Veatch, first on the beam (9.65) and fourth on the floor (9.0); Lauren Geissler and Emily McPherson, third on the beam (9.3).
Marblehead at Beverly
It was a tough day for the Magicians, but Sydney Levin and Kayla Senwick did well in the all-around, and Maria Chivashvili was good on the floor.
SWIMMING
Matignon 85, St. Mary’s 84
At the Lynn YMCA, this one came down to the final event, the 400 free relay. Winners for the Spartans (0-4) were: Eddie Traniello, 50 free (25.19) and 100 free (57.21); and the free relay team of Traniello, Steven Bourque, Sean Mahar and Erik Whitcomb (1:51.16).
Fenwick 90, Williams 77
At the Salem YMCA, the Fenwick winners were: Jimmy Gauthier, Pablo Jimenez, Carson Christuk and Matthew O’Brien, 200 medley relay (1:58.81); Jimenez, 200 IM (2:44.22); Nicole DiMeglio, 100 breaststroke (1:24.88); Gauthier, 50 free (24.78) and 100 free (56.09); Christuk, 100 butterfly (58.09) and 100 backstroke (1:01.65).
